Retro Emulators and gamepad for the mi box

by dreadfulwhaler

I've ordered the mi box, and my wife first got excited when I told her about the possibilities to play the good old ones on it. Which emulators do you recommend and which gamepad? I've noticed the 8bitdo with Bluetooth on aliexpress, which looks interesting.

Retroarch. Bt game pads do alright for anything that doesn't need twitch reflexes, otherwise go wired.

MD.emu for Sega Genesis & Sega CD games

Mupen64plus FZ for Nintendo 64

SNES9x EX+ for Super Nintendo

Yabause for Sega Saturn

ePSXe for PlayStation 1

Reicast for Sega Dreamcast

The retroarch experience for actually playing is just halfassed on all platforms which is why many people like 'launchers' or frontends

RetroX as a frontend for libretro instead of striaght retroarch gives the best experience for you and non-techie people as far as getting it all setup and launching the games, finding the games in your library you want to play, getting your controller setup properly etc...

Dig is the best free one , other paid ones people like are ArcBrowser

I would install RetroX trial and try it out then go try Dig or straight retroarch

p.s. I have worked in tech industry 20+ years and tinker/hack all the time with my bad sw dev skills, but when I play I just want to enjoy without all the friction

RetroArch for sure. I have it on mine and have about 1,000 roms copied over for NES, SNES, Genesis, Arcade, GBA, etc. And USB SNES controllers plug in and you basically have a RetroPie.

I like the Xbox One gamepad, you can use it wireless with BT or use any micro usb cable to wire it up if you want. I use RetroArch and the Steam Link app (for Sega Mega Drive and Genesis Classics).
