Nexus Players are mysteriously dying as loyal owners hunt for solutions

Probably failing flash storage. That's what it sounds like from the errors people are seeing at least. Pretty much the only part of these types of devices that experiences wear from use. Some of these boxes are getting pretty old, so group die offs from same production runs isn't entirely out of the question.

Hmmm... I had one, but I gave it away after I got the Shield TV.

We still use ours in our bedroom and it works just fine. Not as snappy as the Shield TV in the living room, but still does everything it should.

It seems clear that it has something to do with the onboard memory, I remember the good old days when I had a PopcorHour and the same thing happened, a lot of boxes died the same year, and no factory reset and/or flashing would make them work, they just stopped booting al of a sudden.

Now I regret not getting the Shield TV during prime day.

One of my Nexus Players recently died. It'll power up, but only says Google across the screen. It never advances beyond that point. Luckily I have a couple spares, since I had replaced two of them with Shields.

Edit: Added a word for proper English.

Mine just died this morning. Looking through the volume and timing of complaints, I just can't believe this is an aging hardware issue. Something software related "soft bricked" these things.

eagles310

I still have one sealed and using one in a room

The nexus player has been a good servant though. No regrets. May you rest in peace.

sillycat98

Mines dead too, they want more than I originally paid for it to even look at it.

cantwejustplaynice

Mine's still kicking along as the centre piece of our lounge room entertainment system. The remote died a long time ago but the game controller and/or phone app get the job done. I'll either get a shield (since they've finally become legitimately available here in Australia) or upgrade to a 4K screen with AndroidTV built it.

I brought an Apple TV about a month ago and haven't touched the NP remote. It's still plugged in, will give it a look after work.

finnistre

mine is still up and running. downgraded to nougat and its still great so far.

REDoneofone

shield for the win. and google should be boosting it as well as they SHOULD have been doing the np.

cr0wstuf

Yep. Mine died last week. I power cycled the device and now it won't boot into Android at all. Constant boot loop and no way to boot into recovery.

Skw33dle

Does putting LineageOS on the NP work to stave off this problem? LineageOS Builds for fugu

I just turned my NP on for the first time in months and quickly turned off Wifi before any OTA could hit. I know there seems to be a working solution on a XDA thread: XDA Fix for Dead Nexus Players

What do you guys think?

sinlightened

Welp.. mine in the bedroom has been having a few more hiccups lately. I've got a spare somewhere (bought 3 at one point for $20 each during clearance) so at least I can fall back on that one for a bit.

Kinda wish I hadn't given that 3rd away tho.

Planned Obsolescence via remote trigger is a go!

Surprised it wasn't Cook & Co. pushing said 'feature' first!?

paintmekev

I'm glad I have the shield pro so I can replace my drive
