Why are android updates called OTA?

by SerBardiche

Not a question for AndroidTV specifically, but since its relevant;

Why are android updates called over the air updates?

No android uses uhf/vhf to update afaik. And they are all, over the internet instead.

Because you don't need to plug in a USB cable to your computer to update like we used to back in 09'

It's a wireless update instead of wired, so it's over the air

The term comes from Android itself - being a mobile OS - and phones get updates 'Over The Air' aka wirelessly

Wifi and cellular transmit data over the air...

It means Over the Air. Mean wireless updates over the internet. Simple as that.

Why don't they just call it update.

The confusion comes from the overlapping use of the term OTA.

In the realm of old school terrestrial TV broadcasting, OTA signifies programming sent over the public airwaves instead of proprietary cable system.

Likewise, in the computer world, OTA applies to communications over wireless as opposed to hardwired.
