I've got 1TB external HDD connected to my Mi Box, I'm able to play movies locally using the VLC app.
I'd like to make this HDD available from my home network and being able to update it from my Windows & Mac laptops.
Is that possible?

If you can share the HDD via Smb protocol you can connect with vlc, fx file explorer, es file explorer etc. easily. But if you watch 4k movies, wireless connection is not good as direct usb connection.
If you only want the update HDD content, share the HDD from MiBox with FX File Explorer, ES File Explorer etc. apps and connect from your pc will be better solution i think. With these apps you can reach the HDD with ftp or web ui and manage easily.
This sounds exactly what Plex was created for.
Does your Wi-Fi router have a USB port? If so, connect the drive to that, share it out and access via VLC or Kodi.
