The Nvidia Shield has the worst remote ever made

by ECrispy

What were they thinking? Did no one ever test this thing? Its a $200 device and the remote is worse than everything else, ever. You can buy lots of cheap crap for $20 and they will have better remotes.

First of all the button (or lack thereof) is stupid. Then they spent all the moeny on the stupid touich bar which is useless.

It constantly loses connection, and it has horrendous input lag. I have never seen any other remote with this kind of unpredictability and lag.

I agree. Mibox remote is cheap but works better and it has actual volume buttons.

I have another issue. Nvidia shield automatically scrolls to the left and keeps doing it. I talked to support and they are replacing the Shield controller because its a known issue. Great box, horrible remote.

Deeco7

I think it's due to the Auto-stanby feature, which fails to a wake up in time. Nvidia still push updates to a fix the issue, but doubt it will make any difference.

GreatScottTX

Agree. The Mi Box one is tons better. The GooBox bootleg android box has an amazing remote that I would much prefer.

Shield users will be really interested in this post for a decent alternate, voice search, wireless - $10 remote:

bitchkat

Mines not bad except for that fucking horrible touch bar for volume. I wish that could just be disabled.

karanchoo

This.

i throw my shield in drawers and started using mi box , only because shitty remote.

nolookjones

agreed finally got a shield and almost instantly switched to my Harmony hub..

rk_29

I have to disagree - it never looses connection and the touch control for volume is actually pretty cool.

BurtMacklin-FBl

Not a fan of the touch controls but I find it tolerable overall. The only thing that bothers me is the lag but rotating the shield 90 degrees solves it for me. It does suck that BT connection looks to be affected by the position of the device when you would expect it to just work from any angle.

sporez

I agree so much. It takes forever to come out of sleep (usually requiring a couple clicks of a button), terrible lag, the volume touch slider is so imprecise and easy to accidentally change, and (at least mine) requires charging at least once a week. I really like the shield but the remote is horrendous. Often I use a BT remote from my old firetv stick because it is much more responsive.

totodee

That's why so many of us use something else. I use a Logitech K400+ keyboard. I just keep the stock remote around to do voice searches.

FromThatOtherPlace

Soon as I got my shield I just plugged in my FLIRC device and my trusty $15 OneForAll, which btw is the best remote out of 30+ I've tested.

howtodoit

You never used a video+ did you ;)

KnitYourOwnSpaceship

The Amazon Fire TV remote is a good replacement, as is the Harmony 650, if you want to control other devices too (but I think the latest Shield dropped the IR receiver?)

zeta_cartel_CFO

Indeed it does suck. That's why I just started using the Android app as a remote. I have a Logitech harmony. But haven't configured it how to get it to work with the shield yet. Maybe i'll try that out one day.

Those Bluetooth remote won’t wake the Shield up from a sleep state. If you get the USB reciever one it will.

elister

Bought this for my Raspberry Pi3, using a USB 2.4ghz receiver.

Reading the reviews, it appears to work on the shield.

It gets a lot of hate but I've gotten used to it. My only complaint is the complete lack of TPU cases. I don't have constant issues with connectivity or input lag, unless I'm waking it from sleep mode after not using it for a while.

best remote I've ever used actually. Only downside is no mic but if you leave the controller plugged in and turn on always listen it works fine.

CTU

It is a shitty remote. I prefer to use my Logitech harmony through CEC then to use that thing

REDoneofone

and some of the worst unintelligent owners. turn on CEC. use receiver remote. problem solved. well, not the owner problem.
