First impressions on the Mi Box after a lot of contemplation ( Updated to Oreo )

by epicincognito

Hi,

I finally got my Mi Box on Saturday evening and in a couple of hours because I could see how limited Marshmellow was when it came to the launcher I updated the absolutely new device to Oreo keeping in mind the risk that was to take.

Straight away came the bug where if you have the device connected to the wifi then after set up the home screen shows blank and nothing happens until you press the back button that takes you to the language page again.

But after getting around and finally getting in I actually did not face too many issues. Just a couple of bug tbh.

Like the mouse pointed being limited to a side of the screen.

Like the volume on JBL charge is mute when the box wakes up and I try to resume spotify. Also I do not know how to actually set up youtube to show trending stuff from my country and not my location on home screen. ( I am an expat )

Installed Mobdro, Morpheus tv and sideloaded other apps. ES File explorer is shit so I had to use the google drive technique via Aptoide TV.

Netflix runs smooth ( I have 720p 60fps tv ) so no issues.

What was surprising impressive is how good the casting is. And what does not make sense is when Prime Music works flawlessly on Android TV why doesnt Prime Video work.

Any suggestions? I want to play some games like Minecraft PE and use the device more. Any help? or inputs?

Have you tried fast-forwarding and rewinding in YouTube app? On my 2 MiBox, this completely froze the system multiple times. In particular, this only happens with videos that have no thumbnails during fast-forward or rewind, like newly uploaded videos. I suspect this is more likely a bug of the official YouTube app. I switched to Smart YouTube TV app a week ago and haven't experienced such freeze since then.

As for gaming, a few 2D games I tried ran just fine, like Double Dragon Trilogy, Retro City Rampage DX, Death Road to Canada, and PAC-MAN 256. 3D games fared much worse. Minecraft Story Mode, which is already a few years old, is completely unplayable due to severe graphical glitches all over the place. Bard's Tale seems to run fine at first, but screen keeps spinning after game starts and also randomly causes the entire system to lose sound (had to unplug power to fix it, even reboot won't help). Riptide GT2 runs smoothly but also has some control issues with 360 wireless controller. NBA JAM runs very well. So don't expect too much with 3D games since we can't really update drivers on Android TV other than firmware update.

I love Spotify on it, the suggestions in the home screen are as good as Netflix’s

I use AirScreen to cast my Apple devices, works flawlessly, sometimes better than chromecast (YouTube I’m looking at you)

Puffin TV is a good browser though not perfect.
