So again the question I have is Android TV dead?

by 75thUser

I've been away from the OS for a while now because it was buggy and YouTube and Netflix always had problems especially on the mibox. Like is there a chance of Android Pie actually coming out with Android OS or is it dead in the water?

Android TV was never buggy for me. Been using it for years and have "survived" each update.

The Google supplied Android OS is in reasonable shape, its the underlying Linux Kernel that is the worry...

Simply stop using any devices containing AMLogic Hardware for anything to do with Android Oreo.

AMLogic Oreo uses a really buggy brand new v4.9.x Linux Kernel and frankly users of such devices, like the Mi Box and MECOOL KM8 are now being treated as test guinea pigs.

Every seller of such devices is using the same buggy underlying Kernel and driver source code, and no one bothers testing properly before the sellers Marketing Machine ramps up it's advertising to sell such buggy devices to an unsuspecting public.

If you want relatively stable Android TV stick with Marshmallow or Nougat on every AMLogic device.

Use Oreo only on the NVIDIA Shield, that still uses an old but stable v3.x Kernel.

However the Kernel is so old now it is putting Windows SMB file servers under a Severe Security risk due to still using insecure SMB v1.0 networking protocols:

NVIDIA have had 1.5 years to get their shit together regarding SMB v1.0 security. It's pretty obvious that it is not High Priority for them.

If that concerns people they should choose a different Hardware platform, one that is not Android.

The OS is fine, maybe the problem was the platform you were running it on?

ADT-2 shows that they're still putting some effort into it.... But not enough IMHO.

Until the ADT-2 can be bought at Walmart, it will continue to flounder.

Yes. Everything is dead. Android TV, Android, iOS, Apple, Google. All dead. Now build your own OS which will work with your crappy MiBox.

Google is releasing a new version of Android TV at regular intervals and not sure why you still think its dead.

My Shield has and remains awesome. My Mibox was completely functional pre Oreo - and with Oreo its better. My Sony TV doesn't have Oreo - but is still working fine. So yeah Android TV is far from dead for me.

And given in addition to Nvidia, Sony, TCL and Xiaomi - we also have Westinghouse, Hisense and Philips jumping in - AND several cable boxes as well.

So yeah...NOT DEAD.

So I would give it a go again if I was you.
