Any custom OS's for AndroidTV?

by mr_blanket

Hey guys sorry if this is a dumb question. I just bought my first Android TV and was curious if there were any custom OS's out there.

Last Android phone I owned was the HTC One X, and ran CyanogenMod. Just wondering if the same kind of custom community exists for Android TV?

Thanks!

Lineage OS supports the ShieldTV.

I never tried it as I dont want a stock Android Version on it.

There were some for the nexus player but development has pretty much stopped in like '16 or '17

Yeah you can use LineageOS, but watch out you will lose certain certifications (I think that includes Chromecast, for sure Amazon and now Netflix because of their updated policies)

Can someone who actually installed it confirm?

Are you talking about Android TV or Android TV boxes?

The first is installed (basically) only on TVs, Nvidia SHIELD TV and MiBox. The other is out of topic for this sub.

What features are you expecting to gain from custom OS that you don't already have in stock Android TV?

I'd guess that among other things like the launcher and possibly Shield remote compatibility, with a custom ROM you'd lose built in Chromecast support, a truly underrated Android TV feature. I just got the Shield 7.1 preview update the other day (it's an Oreo build despite numbering).
