Hi guys. My local electronics store is doing a great deal on the 55" a1. £1200 bet however it will overhang on my stand by about 1.5" on either side.
Will this be an issue with stability? Any risks of screen damage with it not being supported along the full length?

The stand itself will hang over, or the TV? If the TV stand is seated fully on whatever you're resting it on then you should be fine. If the stand itself hangs over a little, you should still be fine, just be cautious not to bump it. I had a fun experience bumping a TV that hung over it's stand a little bit in the front.
Definitely risky. Especially with a 3 year old! I would wall mount it.
If you have no kids or pets who could accidently bump into the tv, you'd probably be ok. Overhanging tvs are more likely to move or get dislodged if someone hits them than ones completely inside the edges of the stand, because you can't hit an edge if it's not exposed. Otherwise you should be ok.
