Looking for Beta testers -> Android TV app for Twitch.tv

by Daell

The app is released!

Since the official Twitch.tv app hasn't been updated for 2 years (2016.06.27) and it's pretty broken now. I haven't found any alternative, so i looked around github. Found TwitchDroidTV project, i used this as a base, development build. The current one is completely new, based on the default Android TV preset project.

You can check it out in action:

Currently i'm looking for a couple of beta testers. If you want to be part of the test DIRECT MESSAGE me:

  • your gmail account

  • device and OS version

The beta test not gonna last long, max. a week, so don't worry if you don't get invited.

FAQ:

Where can i change the video quality?

Well, you can't. Right now it's hard coded to 'Auto' quality. In future release you will be able to change it, because it's a pretty basic feature. But during the development Auto quality did a pretty good job, so i never felt the need for other options, but this can be different if you share your bandwidth with a lot of people.

What's that 'Tree icon' do?

Bob Ross mode: if you are watching a standard definition footage, with black bars on the side, you can shift the view to the left/right side, depending on your chat position. So you can watch the video and the chat, without overlap. It is demonstrated here. . This is also the default mode on Bob's channel.

Do you have keyboard shortcuts?

Yes, on the main screen:

  • R - Refresh

  • S - Settings

In the Player:

  • C - Chat On/Off

  • S - Chat size

  • D or P - Chat position

  • V - "shrink video"

  • B - Bob Ross mode

  • M - Stats for nerds

  • O - Kill Feed (shrinks the chat a bit, so you can see the kill feed, exp in Overwatch you see 3 rows of the KF)

  • L - (fast forward button), jump to the end of the stream, basically reload the video and sync it up with the chat. Video buffering "desync" the video and the chat.

I will implement controller support, since we have lot of shield users.

This looks fantastic! Any chance you could implement Picture in Picture as well?

Does this include keyboard support and chat? Currently I use the mobile version of 4.22 side loaded with my Logitech k400 keyboard on my Nexus player daily

Interested but the video doesn't seem to load for me.

spurdosparade

I'm interested, even tho I don't use tho much Twitch I think I can help.

DanGarion

Did your youtube link die?

Footstick

Definitely interested! Glad someone is doing this since the app is definitely outdated.

Funny, I literally did the same thing but for Mixer. Got tired of waiting on them for an ATV app so I made my own but it's quite basic.

More choice is always better, but imho the Twitch Android TV app is really behind the curve. Right now Tchat is probably the best app for Twitch (BTTV, FFZ, gif emotes) even though it's not designed for Android TV, but with the right analogic stick as the mouse input it works.

My suggestion is don't do one long ass row. It's inefficient and looks like garbage. I know Google likes it (They have no UI designers I guess), but go with how most companies do it with multiple rows and columns. Much easier to find things, better use of space, and just looks better.

not gonna be around for a bit to help test, but would love to know about it when it releases.

Are you going to add the chat replay feature with past broadcasts? Currently in the official app you cant see chat if you are watching past broadcast, but when twitch website isn't buffering in every 3 seconds (on 250/50mb fiber connection) you can use Chrome mobile browser on your shield and use the desktop site to get chat replay to work.

However it is not particularly nice user experience to be forced to use air mouse to get that to work.

Also currently in twitch official app, if it stops to buffer when you are watching old broadcast it will go back to the beginning of the video. So does this support the same kind of automated video bookmark feature that you can use with the desktop website, or does it just start from the beginning even if you had watched it on your computer before or if past broadcast video buffers.

It's been pretty good for me so far, the only things I've noticed is the stream buffers a bit in the beginning (first 1-2mins), everything is smooth after that though. Also the emotes seem a bit pixelated.

Again thank you for putting in the time and effort, appreciate it.

Is your code open source? and if so where would I go to look?

Would be happy to beta if I can see the source

Can’t wait for this to be available to download. Shield user here, and I love Twitch, but hate the buggy Twitch app.
