S0undTV - Android TV client for Twitch

by Daell

2018-09-20: EDIT:

After review, S0undTV - Android TV Twitch client, com.s0und.s0undtv, has been removed from Google Play because of an unauthorized use of copyrighted content.

EDIT2: Resubmitted the app at CET ~12:00

EDIT3: It's back up!

2018-09-24: Got removed, once again, same thing.

2018-09-24 - 9PM: Resubmitted

2018-09-24 -11PM: It's up again (for a while?)

We finally reached this day!

After some beta testing, i can release the app. Thank you for those who participated in the beta testing, hopefully we gonna have a smooth launch.

  • You can install the app from the Desktop Play Store: LINK

  • or search for 'S0undTV' in the Android TV Play store.

I still keep the Beta channel for the future with regular updates, so if you want more frequent updates (and possible bugs) you can opt-in: HERE . If you were part of the beta testing, and don't want to be part of it anymore, you can opt-out with the same link.

Planned, upcoming features (pretty much in this order):

  • search

  • user profiles to be able to access VODs, clips

  • VOD playback with resume (don't expect chat)

  • Improved chat start up time, faster emote parsing.

  • Be able to write to chat (currently, it's read-only)

  • Access to followed channels, be able to favorite them, and order them by this.

  • Picture-in-picture

  • Channel specific chat settings? with more chat options like, chat in the top corners.

  • Recommendation service, so you can access 'Featured' or 'Followed' channels on the home screen.

Thank you for this looks so much better than the official twich app. Please don't abandon us like they did. You rock!

barisahmet

At last! A good Twitch client for Android TV. Thanks! I like it so much. You should make a paid version tho.

mrmikedude100

Been in the beta program for the past week and the app works great. 👍

Sour_Pickel

You should add an option to theme it... Some "color" change settings to get it back to the original look while still avoiding the claims it's a IP violation.

battierpeeler

works great. left a 5 star on play store

Roedrik

Literally packed up my TV earlier today to move but am really excited to give this a go! Thanks for putting the effort into making a new Twitch app!

I know we have different opinions when it comes to UI, but this is a very nice app.

Having a followed channel (on the Google OS home screen) would be huge for me and glad it's on your to-do list.

I don't know if possible, but it would be nice to activate through Twitch. I'm thinking developers can't, but I don't know.

A followed, but offline category would be nice. But that is more needed with your future VOD access update and not important now.

Maybe an option to layout the channels in a grid (ie 5 columns and X rows). I think untwitch does it that way, so can use for reference. Please :)

My only question (s) is, how do I chat? I don't see a chat box/send box anywhere. Can see chat through your options, but can write anything. Also the "full screen" icon doesn't do anything for me. That might be why I can't chat?

Again, I really do like it. Love that there are options now and I really like the look of the large thumbnails of the online followed category.

Edit: I exited and went back in and that fixed the icons. I think the tree icons pushed the video slightly off screen and then the full screen icon shunk it to fit. Maybe have one icon to do both? Anyways the chat shows up there (I like the black background!) but no text box to write/send.

I'm probably missing something.

Awesome work man! Runs smooth and fast on my Sony TV! Excited to see it improve as you continue to build and add features.

tarphoun

Amazing work on this. glad to see i'm not the only using using an Android TV device to watch twitch. it's 10x better than the official app.

BlackSER

I don't care what some of you ppl say..this app is 10x's better than the official app. I wish more Android developers had the balls this guy has. Watched a full stream of Lord_Kebun without any hiccups. Once again...works great on the MiBox.

Pouphinger

Extremely good work.

ImpeccableLlama

Good looking out homie, thanks for your work! Can’t wait to check this out!

s0m3f00l

WOW extremely slick. Great job.

vizNNN

This is pretty nice, but I have a few critiques:

1.) Why the huge text saying overall viewers at the top? I find it rather pointless information to begin with, and it’s so big that there’s no getting away from it.

2.) Can you give some information about the various video buttons? Not sure what “kill feed” is, but I’m assuming that it is tailored for CS:GO as it just lowers the chat a bit to allow more room for the kill feed in the upper right corner. In addition, what does the tree button do? Pressing it makes no difference for me.

3.) Chat size doesn’t save from one stream to the next. Is there a way to always have the video shrunken down to allow room for the chat without blocking the video, or always have the chat at full length?

Other than those things, I like this app. Nice job.

MrLyle

This is fantastic work sir. I've been out of town for a while so I couldn't help with the beta testing.

The app works great, everything runs fast and smooth. Once you implement Profiles and VODs, this will be more than ready for primetime.

I want to thank you for your hard work on this man. I'm sure I speak for everyone when I say thank you for looking out for the entire community.

phdzor

Great job. Any chance you can add option to hide "Follow Games", or auto hide it if you don't follow any games. And if it's possible add some fast way to switch between live followed streams.

Kurtdh

Can you provide more information on the app being removed from google play? Is that permanent? If it is, do you still plan on releasing updates, and will we be able to side load the app somehow? If so, where would we download the app when new updates come out?

battierpeeler

hmmm after i while i noticed some of the channels just don't work. for instance, right now DrLupo and Rypsii both never load. they stay on a static image. both on my pc browser they are working fine.

MapGuy11

Can You Maybe Add Were it brings up a code for login and you go to that website and put in your account details there. IE: Amazon Apps On Roku,PlayStation Vue on Roku. If you cant thats ok just a suggestion.

Wassermineral

Any chance that a list view (or something equally compact) for your followed channels will be added? Just to have a quick overview of who is streaming right now, instead of having to go through all of them.

Love the app so far, huge improvement over the official one.

Edit: the stream settings buttons don't fade out automatically after using them, is that intentional?

MrLyle

Ran into a problem with chat freezing. It stops scolling at random times and the only way to get it going again is to close and reopen the stream.

I dunno if it has to do with the update cause last night I watched a stream for 2 hours and chat ran fine all the way through. This morning I updated the app and now I'm watching the same stream as last night and chat froze twice in a span of 30 minutes. Could just be coincidence though.

EDIT: Yeah, it keeps doing it so it's not a one off. It didn't do it last night.

blurcoupdegrace

Thanks man. :)

richhh01

How can I get picture in picture to work?

Kurtdh

Daell,

When I started using your app, I noticed “hitching”. Meaning, the buffering circle appears for about a half second every few minutes when I’m watching a stream. This is interrupting my viewing experience. When I swap back to the official twitch app, I get no short buffering freezes at all. It’s exclusive to this app.

Any idea why this would be happening, or a way to fix it? I’m on an nvidia shield. Thanks again.

Edit: if it helps, here’s the stats from the stats for nerds:

Connection speed goes between 140 and 163 Mbps. Which is weird, because when I use the Speedtest app on my shield, it shows 300 Mbps. Buffer health stays constant at 6.0s and dips to 1.0s every 5 seconds. Network activity hovers between 0kb and 2 MB.

billyvnilly

I'd really like an offline row. I want to easily to see able to watched missed streams from people I follow.

saunderez

Any chance of getting a offline followed streamers category added? I live in the wrong timezone as most of my favourite streamers so rely on watching VODs and can't really do so without being to look at past broadcasts of offline streamers

joakimbo

Awesome

Saici

Cheers for the app, this is great

sackboyx

Is there an APK download link? I'm trying to side load it in my fire stick TV.

The official twitch tv app is just unbearable. Thanks for all the hard work!

Loving the new 1.1 update! Awesome to have the search finally implemented.

One thing I was wondering is would it be possible to see the “just subscribed with Twitch Prime” notifications in the chat? I was comparing the mobile app while watching the same stream through your app, and I noticed those notifications were omitted from the chat.

Also, I usually watch with the stream pushed to the left to allow full room for the chat. Is there a way of getting a light mode? The black background makes some emotes in chat a little difficult to read, especially with having any sort of black in the emote.

lfvideos

If you need to translate it to spanish let me know, i can help with that.

WhySheHateMe

I do not like having to type my login credentials into the app. Please make it so I can allow the app access to my Twitch account via a code.

Cueball61

THANK YOU.

If not just because now I don’t have to change the quality to get a video to play.

However, some critiques:

  • No Prime/Bit badges or cheermotes?
  • The stream UI is incredibly unintuitive, and not very consistent with the rest of the UI design. It needs text below the buttons telling you what the icon does, and probably needs to be made to fit the rest of the UI as the current icons are pretty out of place IMO

Some minor/nice to have things:

  • Consider switching to phone-based login like the official app does. This is mostly just a case of having a user use Twitch OAuth on a site you host, and enter a code the app supplies which will associate the login token with the code and the app pulls down the login token using the code supplied to the user. Entering passwords on a TV sucks. Minor thing but nice to have of course.
  • Chat is a second or so out I think? Twitch Chat is IRC based so it should be near real-time. Not a major issue but thought you’d want to know about it.
updawg

Can you add a channels option so I can have it on the home screen of my Shield? Thanks!

paontuus

Will you add chat to vods some day in the future or is that too much work? Only thing i miss from this app, otherwise great work!

L0uk4

That's an awesome app and very useful , any chances to let us enjoy it on generic android boxes ? I mean playstore says that is not compatible with none of my android tv boxes (random Chinese brands) nor with my lg g4 h810 phone . Even after downloading and manually installing the apk on my devices it can't launch (it installs normally with the "open" button grayed). the icon doesn't show up on apps draw just on settings>apps with the only option to uninstall. weird .

I really hope it to make it more universal cause this app is a must have for all android boxes .

zaneyk

Hi, I've been enjoying your app for some time now, this latest update have been amazing, with ffz support and it doesn't buffer anymore after opening the stream, and the chat is in sync for me with the 3 sec delay, tested it side by side with the twitch Android app.

Thank you for all your work

Quberch

Thank you very much for this app, I love it and I'm looking forward for further updates ;) Btw. is there a chance to get this app on a Fire Tv? I've searched APKMirror without success. Keep up the good work!
