Transfer files from my pc to my android tv

by lonelady75

Both my PC and my android box are on the same wireless network, if that is any help. I know I can use chromecast to cast files to my tv, or share a folder and have apps like kodi access them... but I am wondering if there is a way to just send the files directly to the android box... I've got a 128GB usb added as 'internal storage' on the android box, and well... my PC gets full really fast. I know I can do it with USB stick, which is what I've been doing all this time, but I'm wondering if there is a way to just wirelessly send the files to the the android box via the network, so that I don't have to keep the files on my PC.

I did this a long time ago but recently had to reformat my PC so I lost the mapping. I've been having trouble getting to reconnect again, so while I can't help at the moment I'll stay posted to this thread in case I ever get it mapped again.

EDIT: so I ended up just re-enabling SMBv1 on my Windows machine to gain access to the SMB service running through Plex Media Server. I really just need it enabled to transfer some files from an old drive to the new drive so I'll be able to disable it afterwards again. Apparently it's outdated and insecure and Plex needs to update their server app to use a better protocol. To map the drive I just set it to drive S:\ and used the login info found via Settings -> Storage &reset -> Transfer files over local network

Is your Android TV device a Shield by any chance? If so, you can go in to the settings and enable local file sharing. Then, on your Windows machine just add it as a new network share and, if you like, map it to a drive letter.

Just in case any Mac users are reading this thinking "What about me?": I found a way to auto-mount an SMB share to a fold on a Mac here...

You have to have your internal storage shared in the Shield's settings and use the credentials generated by the device. The nice thing about this method is that if ever the connection times out, it will reconnect the next time you open the mapped folder. You'll just notice a little delay.

google drive... use x-plorer file manager log into your google drive and i actually use my phone to download apk, then upload to google drive and snatch it from google drive within x-plorer.

Had the same problem last night with my Nvidia shield. Some guy suggested setting up Plex to use the external drive. There’s an option in Plex to make the share available. I noticed I can then write inside the Plex media folder remotely which is good enough for me. I just sporadically then use file explorer to move files elsewhere when I’m back at the Android tv.

Yes. File Commander is great for this.

It's a free app download from Google Play and runs great on the Shield.

There's a setting on the main page of the app which lets you create a locally accessible "server" on your network.

Then (on your PC) go to 192.0.1.xxx in any web browser (It will give you the specific IP number). You'll pull up a "web page" (served by your Shield) and you'll be able to upload files directly to your shield through this browser interface.

Really can't be more simple.

I use Solid Explorer's network drive capabilities with great success. I added my google drive account into my Solid Explorer on my MiBox. Go into the source device, upload the file into GDrive (if it's an Android Device, I use Solid Explorer there too) and then download it on the Android TV.

I've used SE to connect to Samba drives to the same effect... but I find GDrive is more convenient. From the list I see it also supports Dropbox and OneDrive.

Any file manager will also be able to see your shared Windows folders.
