New to Shield TV - what are some cool things to do?

by gleep52

Title. Thing thing shows so much promise. 4K playback with Plex and Emby are great. What are some other uses that Shield can do, that other devices (Apple TV, Roku, etc.) can’t do? Or just cool things they can all do?

Edit: a special thanks for the answers here of those who aren’t salty but want to make shared knowledge a better place. 333 views right now and zero upvotes = really salty sub I guess. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

I Gamestream a good amount. To the point where I stream my windows 10 computer desktop and hook up a keyboard instead of running upstairs if I need to go on my computer.

Also I just started messing with emulators, but it seems really capable at a good amount of them.

I also have been streaming wind waker from cemu on my PC to my TV through steam. I think that's pretty cool.

Home automation via the SmartThings Link Hub. Sure you need to invest for motion detectors, dimmers, switches, etc but its the only one that can control Zigbee/ Z-Wave devices

I used to tinker with my shield and nexus player more but realized its best to just enjoy it as a streaming device.

With that being said I always install Aerial Dream, its the dope apple tv screensavers on Android.

Also I install kodi, or preferably SPMC, its a kodi fork that's optimized for android TV. (There's a beta on the semper pax website so you're on the latest kodi version.) I don't mess with the addons, they're too shoddy, but I do install PlexKodiConnect so I can use SPMC instead of the Plex player.

As I always do I'd like to recommend Archos Video Player.

Enable CEC if you haven't, then you can also use your tv remote.

You can use the voice assistant to say things like 'turn off' when you are done, this will turn off the Shield and connected tv etc.

Wait, is this Thursday? Ah no it's Saturday, just in time for another "I'm new to Shield, what can I do" question, as if the thousand others on the sub don't suffice as an answer
