is it possible to use a phone (cheap) instead of an andoid box?

by chownotso

Is it possible to have a phone charged, connected via hdmi and have a rii mini i8 keyboard to control it? I have a firestick and you can change it into a fire tv by buying an otg cable. I was wondering if you can do something similar. Thanks!

Yes but it would be most like those crappy android boxes they sell for cheap, not like a Shield TV.

Penny wise and a pound foolish. I feel like more money will be spent to get this working than the value it provides.

turn phone into STB? sure.

turn phone into an actual ATV device? no.

you're asking in the wrong place.

Sell the phone and get a Chromecast or Mi Box.

I have a old Samsung galaxy S5 Active that I use on my kids tv. It works great.

Yes get a type c/micro usb to HDMI on Amazon. Also get a mouse and keyboard that can be used over Bluetooth. Download a launcher that's mimics the a Android TV theme.

It can. It's just that it's a little fussy. It gets a little hectic and there will be little latency with the keyboard or with the screen if you chose to mirror the screen.

Why so complicated, just install Webvideocaster from Playstore, browse to your favorite content website (for movies like StreamCR) and cast to your Fire Stick or Smart TV.

Might be possible if it sup[ports HDMI out, but likely it does not have the power to push much video and well since that is not an Android TV this is not the right subreddit to talk about it.
