I've disabled the YouTube app and purely cast youtube from phones.
Noticed this as well. My Sony TV must have auto-updated its entire system, and in effect it now has the default YouTube app as the v2 garbage design. I can no longer uninstall YouTube update from the Play store as now this v2 is the system default.
Is there a workaround in getting the v1 YouTube app back? I don't want to install another knockoff YouTube app as its replacement.
I havent got any update for my bravia but thats bad news, i hate the web wrapper so much

I'm having the same issue and god it is pissing me off so much. Not only did they auto update the tv, they also didnt fucking mention anything before the update because they never do. Unlike android mobile where any update is usually accompanied with info on whats new so you can decide to upgrade or not, i guess android tv users are considered too stupid to need to know that. WHY THE FUCK would you design an app built for android tv that is cleaner looking, better designed ( fewer presses to reach what you want) and less obstructive ( the new app has a HUGE ugly side bar that wont go away) and instead of continuing it, you replace it with a godawful web wrapper that all the non android tvs use. Whats the fucking point of gettjng android tv then?

It is a system installed, you would have to root it.
Look at SmartYouTubeTV, sideload it. It does mostly act like the web app, but blocks ads and no animated gif style icons. As cons, no google assistant search, different and worse button mapping, and a little glitchy.
