I've heard of a few remotes that work, but have some shortcomings and don't offer voice search.
Is there a good alternative on the market?

I use a Harmony One remote. I don't use voice search so it's no big loss for me.
Fire stick remotes work pretty well. I can only vouch for the pre-voice generation, though.
I’m tempted to try the new Fire TV remote that comes out at the end of the month. It seems as though it would be a damn good replacement for the Shield’s remote.
Thanks for the suggestions. I'll have a look at them
I bought a Abox wireless keyboard off amazon. Small and easy to use. Works great. $20 if I remember right
I use the Amazon fire TV voice remote from the v2 fire stick. The voice sometimes works if you hold the mic button, but I don't use it too often. Every now and then I lose connection but it comes back with a restart of the shield. This is on a 2015 shield and it pairs as a shield accessory.
The phone app works good.
I bought the above remote. Voice search works when triggered by the mic button press (needs to be held down instead of simply pressed). No issues detecting voice. Great build quality and e wry button works.
The only issue I've run into with it, is that the select button is mapped to "enter" and not "dpad_center". The very odd app that isn't coded properly will not register the keypress.
No Voice search, but the MINIX A2 Lite Mini Keyboard Air Mouse remote with it's far more reliable (vs Bluetooth) mini USB dongle receiver works.
2x AAA Batteries last 6 month or more with daily usage.
Try any of the latest revisions to the Rii remotes
