I think it's running Android 7.1 (for phones and tablets) and not AndroidTV which is a separate operating system optimized for your TV and intended to be used with a remote control or gamepad.

I have a mecool. It doesn't have surround sound, so all 5.1 sound sources (movies videos...) sound distorted and horrible. I would advise you to get a mi box. Also have it and it has no codec problems.

I have a mecool box - a M8Spro - Android 7.1 3GB DDR4 & 32GB Flash TV BOX, Edal M8S PRO MECOOL Android 7.1 TV box 3GB DDR4 & 32GB Flash Amlogic S912 64 bit Octa core ARM Cortex-A53 CPU up to 2 GHz Smart TV box.

I use it to watch Plex (in Kodi because the Android Plex app doesn't play videos since recent updates), Amazon Prime, Netflix, Hulu, Vudu and Youtube. Surround sound works. H265 from my Plex server direct plays in 1080p w/5.1 surround sound through my home theater system.

The main issues I have:

  1. Launch screen is basic like they didn't even try.
  2. Every once in awhile it will turn off. I think this is a power adaptor issue as it only shuts down when the system is seemingly under most CPU load - the power supply is likely inadequate.
  3. The boot splash screen music is loud and annoying. Worst of all, it seems to cut off at the end - not very professional.
  4. As others have said, it seems to have regular Android OS, not the TV. There are times when the remote won't select things in some apps because it is meant to pressed with a finger. Therefore, I had to get a wireless remote mouse thing.

Overall, it does the job but if I were to do it again, I'd likely spend the extra cash and get something like the Nvidia Shield.

If you do not need Chromecasting and 4K Netflix & 4K Amazon Prime, get the following:

1080p Netflix works fine with 5.1 audio. It even dual boots to LibreELEC Kodi Krypton.

The Mi Box for example has 5.1 Netflix audio issues, plus WiFi problems, buggiest box on the market it is.

The S912 chipset in the (Nougat) Android TV OS - M8S Pro L is faster vs the S905X in the Mi Box.

Make sure you get the USB Wireless remote.
