Looks like the leaks were right. It comes with Oreo 8.1 (Treble Support) out of the box with nearly identical hardware to the Mi box 3 bar a new wireless chipset and remote. On sale October 19th.
So what's new apart from the new wireless chipset (bt 4.2 instead of 4.0) because the specs look otherwise exactly the same as the old one. Cortex A53, Mali-450, 2GB DDR3 is the same.
So hopefully the originals will see 8.1 update soon.
These newer boxes really should have 16gb of storage. I'm always struggling with storage on my fire tv and when I upgrade it I won't be buying another one with only 8gb.
Lets say all, or most of the annoying bugs currently present with the Mi Box Oreo update is fixed with the 8.1 firmware that the Mi Box S ships with, is there a chance that same firmware will be released to the 1st gen Mi Box?
If it's similar to the mibox 3 I'll just save up for the Nvidia shield. I loved my mibox initially, but the last year or so it's been a pain in the arse.
So Xiaomi relaunch the Mi Box with near identical specs apart from minor Bluetooth changes and a redesigned Google Assist remote control.
Expect the same buggy, untested Oreo Firmware,with no English support forum for after sales support. It' only a dirt cheap device after all.
The "S" designator likely stands for Sucker, once sold to unsuspecting Guinea pig users who will once again flood this sub Reddit with tales of woe and grief asking why it does not perform like a NVIDIA Shield !

I have several concerns/questions.
Will this have the same issues as the MiBox I currently own? (Bogs down in menus when set to actual 4k resolution) I am not seeing how this "S" edition is going to be any different than what I already have.
Are there any changes to supported apps? (Currently Hulu works but you can't watch live TV, only VoD content... this might be a gripe with Hulu not Xiaomi necessarily)
I also have concerns with privacy, I'm super paranoid and hope their other devices don't phone home like Xiaomi phones do , maybe there is a setting that hopefully turns this off?
Is it worth upgrading from the mibox? whats different? both are 4k stream devices
Does it have an ethernet port built in? Can't seem to find it in the specs.
Seems like a solid package for the money but it's a shame there are almost no upgrades from the original.
This or JetStream? Is JetStream still coming out? Haven't heard any mention of it since it was announced over a month ago...
Any cons to this vs Chromecast ultra? Got a 4k TV recently but no streaming device and this looks good for the price. Never had an Android TV device before and it seems like it's a no brainer to go with this over the Chromecast, just looking for more opinions.
Does the "Live" button on the remote mean that this will support a USB antenna? I don't believe the last Mi Box does, and I'd love to have over-the-air TV right on the box.
So, what is exactly the point in releasing a new device that is identical to its predecessor? Am I missing something? By the way, would adding more storage significantly raise the price of this device?

Google will require Android boxes launching after December will be required to have Android pie so hopefully we see some new hardware in the near future
