No New Android TV Device Announced By Google Today, What Are The Alternatives?

by rubin110

I was hoping Google would announce a new Android TV device to succeed the Nexus Player. They didn't, sadly.

So what should I upgrade to? I appreciate stock Android experiences, and mostly am using my Android TV for watching videos through YouTube, Netflix, and Kodi. Thanks!

shieldTV and mibox (new one released today) are the 2 most mainstream options

Shield no question. It's the best.

Shield is Stock with couple of NVIDIA apps like Gamestream.

It all comes down to how you plan on using the device. The Nvidia Shield has far more capabilities for the more adventurous type. The MiBox is what I would equate to the Android TV equivalent to a Roku, Amazon Fire, or Apple TV. It will do the basics very well, but beyond that it has its limitations.

Im holding out for a next gen Shield. I want gamecube emulation to be smooth.

It sounds like these devices (Shield TV and MiBox) Are really the only two boxes that have good support/updates. Is this true? Are there other boxes that get updates automatically?

I've had a TV box for several years now but it never pulled updates and became out-dated very quickly.

Amazon Fire TV maybe.

No Chromecasting, but great bang for the buck...

The Pro L S912 chipset is way faster than the S905X in the Mi Box.

Nvidia Shield can be flashed flashed both of mine with full nougat for awhile right after I got them. Have since reverted back to stock.
