does widevine1 and google certified exist in the same cheap box?

by stonecats

i wanna get a 4K box capable of netflix HD and youtube 4k.
i was about to buy a mecool L (widevine1) till i see no google
i was about to buy a mi box S (google) till i see no widevine1

i want a box with DRM that actually supports HD-4K content,
so what's a boy to do if all he's got to spend is less than $100 ?

Android TV devices support widevine 1...

I wish I could tell you of such a device but I'm a moron that bought a Shield TV so I'm part of the problem.

But on this topic - I find it insane Netflix is continuing to enforce tighter and tighter restrictions on their service. You're trying to do the right thing paying for a sub and all of a sudden your device doesn't have the right DRM to fully utilise the service. At what point do people say "fine, fuck it" and go back to piracy? All of their original content is readily available outside of Netflix within hours of releasing it, their DRM isn't doing a whole lot to stop it.

MDZ-16-AB and MDZ-22-ab both have a full complement of required DRM facilities to meet your needs, including the elusive Playready....

Only other gotcha is be sure your connected screen has corresponding DRM abilities, or all bets are off:)

Where are you getting the idea that the MiBox S doesn't have Widevine support? It claims to support Netflix in 4K, so I'd presume it'd have to, right?

What service requires Widevine? I'm assuming Netflix 4k? I don't know about the new MiBox but the old MiBox does Netflix 4K just fine. It's a Google certified Android TV device, so there is no fear that Netflix will pull support. Netflix 4k is only in the 15Mbps range it streams fine on what ever 5g wifi you have. Amazon make deals all the time about their service running on Android TV. If the sideload doesn't work it's because they don't want it to. They have a one sided feud going on.

My lady does 4K (according to stats for nerds) on her OG Mi Box with YouTube, we only have 1080 for Netflix tho so I can't speak on that.

Yes.

The most recent MECOOL Pro L with voice remote definitely has Widevine L1 DRM and HDCP 1.x for 1080 Android TV Netflix (yes it works). It might even have Microsoft's Playready DRM by now which is needed by Amazon Prime Video (check on the Freaktab Website)

Virtually all of the Google uncertified devices (inc. MECOOL M8... whatever) do NOT have HDCP 2.2 - which is needed for 4K Netflix and 4K Prime Video. They do not have working Chromecasting either.

The Google Certified - Android TV - Mi Boxes have all the required DRM's and HDCP's for 4K Netflix / Prime

But the new 2018 Amazon FireTV Stick is now sporting more powerful hardware at a cheaper price - that might be worth a really good look.

Firmware support will be Lot better from Amazon vs Xiaomi going forward, that is really important.
