Mi Box S vs Jetstream Box (Wal-Mart)

by mcom13

I'm interested in a low-medium priced Android TV to replace my aging Nexus Player. I don't need ethernet. My main concern is receiving ongoing updates. Which of these two devices is more likely to get Android P, Q?

Well I don't know much about Jetstreams manufacturer so can't say how much they'd update it. I think the mi box s would be more likely since the mi box 3 did go from marshmallow to Oreo.

Internal specs are the same. But it does have Ethernet, optical, and sd card spots, which can be a huge selling point for me.

What would be cool, if it doesn't have a locked bootloader, but doubtful. We got a few people here picking them up. We will see!

Generic vs. Sub-generic.

Is there really a '?' of choice here or are some simply looking for approval to make the illogical decision..?

Probably Mi Box, seeing as how I can't find that damn Jetstream anywhere

I wouldn't buy and low level device expecting OS updates. You would just have to consider it a bonus if it does happen.

The most likely source of reliable updates would come from non Android TV devices like Amazon's FireTV's.

Amazon have a vested interest in making sure their devices work properly with a wide variety of equipment due to their Prime Video streaming service.

Expecting timely, bug busting updates on any budget Chinese sourced Android TV device is just Wishful thinking.

I picked up a Jetstream android TV and it's pretty nice, A youtube update caused it to reboot once, but after that it was fine.

As far as hardware goes the Jetstream is superior, has a ethernet port, SDcard slot, two USB ports etc.

Performance is good and after it updated all the core google stuff even the Amazon Prime APK works great.

Also the power/sleep button actually works. (compared to Mibox 3 with oreo)

We will have to see how often Ematic provides updates.
