is there some sort of an embargo against android tv from streaming services?

by LethalTickle

like honestly. Philo, directv now, hulu live and more. don't work on android tv

almost every smart tv since ~2015 is an android tv. its too widespread. yet its purposely unsupported. its not really a complex matter

This because US TV streaming providers want a locked down system such as Apple TV or Roku TV.

Patience. YouTube TV is coming to your area soon (if not already) and it'll have better local channel lineups than the competition when it does.

I sideloaded DTVN on my Shield and it works fantastic. Supposedly, on the DTVN reddit, a CS told a customer they’re working on an Android app and should be out soon. However take that with a huge grain of salt.

From a developer resources point of view would you rather.... develop Apps for ? ....

a) a larger Roku OS, FireOS or tvOS ECO system on narrow focus types of known, specific hardware, where there is not that much variation at all, OR

b) an Android TV Apps ECO system, where there are numerous hardware configurations and variations (TV's / Set Top Boxes / Media Players) and the OS itself does in reality not have that large a market share vs the other three.

There would also be some streaming services that simply refuse to work with Google on anything, very likely due to competing contracts or ownership structures.

And this is why I IPTV, if they can't provide the content on the platform I want to use then so be it, I'm willing to pay they just don't want my money bad enough.

Not sure that you understand that smart tv and Android tv are completely different. Your post mentions almost all tv's since 2015. And that's definitely not the case. Chances of someone having an Android tv are few and far between. Smart tv's use a completely different OS.

Seriously! I have 2 android TVs and I’ve come to the realization that I need to get a different device for streaming tv.

It's really just marketshare. Standalone Android TV devices are a very, very small market compared to other boxes, and even then set-top boxes like Apple TV don't get many streaming apps because the vast majority of customers don't use them over traditional cable boxes.

Or just side load some better streaming APK plus a good Kodi build..join a filelinked room get some store codes keep up on the latest free streaming apps...I have Android TV on two of my boxs and I absolutely love them for all my gaming needs and streaming needs

Most people here aren’t from Canada. But Bell has a Fibe TV app and it let’s you watch all channels you can with their receivers. Basically saves me $7/month/receiver rental. Which is shocking since Bell used to always be “behind the times”

The matter of consistency might be a factor if not the factor. If I’m thinking as a developer a platform support I think would be a major point of whether I gave my time to it or not. That I think boils down to the platform maker just needs to show/give hints/say what long term strategy ideas are for it and that it’s not changing. Why develop for a platform that the maker of it is putting as little effort into as possible themselves and who knows if they’ll trash the platform and replace it with an entirely different one.

I haven’t seen or heard of Google doing anything to push the platform. I actually don’t think most people (lamens) even know google has a Android TV platform even Android phone users. If so, why put time and effort into it. Cook on the other hand mentions Apple TV often in interviews and it’s mentioned in their conferences even when it’s not about the Apple TV. If the Apple TV had multiple device support and multi-tasking of it all I’d have a Apple TV 4 instead of a Android TV.
