MiBox MDZ-16-AB - Frozen at splash screen - how to recover?

by thegame310

Hey all,

I have an American Mi Box MDZ-16-AB that a few weeks back froze up and no only boots to the splash screen and does nothing more.

I would like to attempt to boot this into recovery and try flashing the stock rom, however I am having a terrible time finding any sort of clear and concise instructions/files for this box.

If anyone could give some guidance (or atleast a link to the latest stock rom) I would very grateful.

Thanks!

:Edit: I have koshergoy to thank for this info as well. He led me to saving the 2, and I'm working on the third.

I had 3, all three died at different intervals after last update 2303. I resurrected 2. 1 of the 2 I've had to flash twice.

The one I can't recover so far locks up on the 4 spinning Google icons before the white on black "Android" during boot.

In short, boot into recovery, wipe cache then wipe data. Then load the update in the thread I'll link here. I loaded 2179 without doing the previous build the build before 2179. Make sure to have the 2nd file 'xioami_update' on the USB stick with the update.zip file. After the wipes, I pull the power cord and plug in the USB stick, then power on holding the two remote buttons that load the recovery menu, but it should immediately read and install the update, displaying "installing updates." It will reboot a couple times while installing the update. Once done, pull the power, and if all went well, boot into (mostly) stable 2179.

Good luck!

Just in case... I had this issue too and nothing worked to resolve it, including the linked article. Eventually, at about the 6th attempt to even boot into recover my Mi stopped outputting video too. Don't be afraid to chat with Xiaomi. I did and once they determined it was indeed dead, they sent me a prepaid fedex label and in less than a week I have a new one in a retail shrink wrapped box.

I'm beginning to think that the latest firmware is slowly bricking these things and that is why it was pulled. I just had my SECOND one start freezing at the Mi screen. This was my original Mi about 8-9 months older than the first one. Something just isn't right with these, and given the new Jetstream box seems a touch better, once mine are no longer accepted under warranty, I'll be switching. Good support like I noted is one thing, but if these just keep failing, what's the point?

Anticipating your next question, you may have bootloop issues if your usb thumb driver is off spec. Try another drive til it works

Good luck
