byebye Mi Box, Questions about Shield TV

by EAT-17

So I will sell my Mi Box soon, we all know about the Software bugs I think. It makes me so angry I just want to get rid of it.

Previously I had a cheap Firestick which also sucked bad. So I am tired of sucking tv boxes... And the shield is regarded as the best.

My question is, will I have any issues with:

  • Netflix, Amazon Prime, Youtube, Plex, or other common Apps? (afaik Shield is one of the few that has prime)
  • any widespread known bugs I need to check when I buy one (return if affected)
  • Games: I don't think I'll be playing much on the shield... maybe streaming from local PC or Free android games
  • Which Version do you recommend? (with controller?) I have a Bluetooth controller that works with android devices (Gamesir).

Shield hardware doesnt support full 4kHDR for Youtube. Get a 2015 16GB version. Cheaper than new with same hardware and you can use pretty much any USB remote. i use a Windows Media Center remote (works good and is fully functional with Kodi and is cheap) combined with the Android TV remote if I need to type anything on some screens.

Other than that there's no real issues. Other connected wifi devices used to unpair occasionally, but that seems to be fixed

Get the controller you can sell it for more than you save not getting it

Good thing is the Amazon app is legit and not sideloaded. Just get the version without the game controller. Check to see if Google Express or eBay have coupons. Even if you pay regular price it’s worth it. I had the Mi Box and Fire TV and Roku and the Shield is leaps and bounds better. I regret not buying it sooner.

One thing to check for. The power brick - make sure it isn't making noise. There's no danger, just the annoyance factor. It's a really high pitched whine.

My original one started making noise, and the replacement did too. 3rd time was the charm. nVidia will ship you a new one at no cost and you don't need to send the old one back, each one took 2 days to arrive.

Bugs, especially for HDR usage, there is a list over on the Kodi forum:

Probably a wise decision given Xaomi's lack of action on it. Going to be the only way to get a reliable device.
