Buying the Mi Box S or waiting for S905X2/S922?

by elgenes

Should I buy the Mi Box S or wait for the S905X2 or the S922? They both come with HDR10+/Dolby Vision support.

I guess there is no way of playing Dolby Vision on a S905x box? I heard something about that HDR10+ perhaps would be playable, but I don't know for sure. It is very new.

Do we have more rumours about upcoming boxes? Support for all HDR standards, USB-C, Bluetooth 5.0 and a faster box in general would be nice. I'm in no hurry.

Off topic: I checked out the Mi Box S on Gearbest, and there are already several reviews - before the box is available(?). It also seems like the reviews are not genuine. One claim that Kodi is preinstalled? That sounds untrue to me. Can I trust Gearbest? Not sure if I want to buy something from them if they fool around. Just got scammed from Dhgate. They do not take action against sellers that scam people, instead they just do refunds. Strange.

Which S905X2 / S922 box offers Dolby Vision?

Warning for anyone shopping for a Dolby Vision box, unless you know it already can do Dolby Vision, don’t buy on the hopes it will. As it’s not just a technology spec, but a paid license for all devices sold up to this point and going forward, manufacturers are hardly ever incentivized to add Dolby Vision in after the fact.

There is NO media player software on any hardware platform that can playback the Dual Layer DolbyVision Metadata you get from 4K DV Bluray Rips. That is all Dolby proprietary tech, and would have to be reverse engineered to make it work.

Specs mean stuff all - "Supported" in Chinese marketing speak is basically B.S. - none of it is any good without supporting Firmware or video playback software AND actual proper Dolby Licenses and Approvals.

"Dolby Audio supported" is basically a Scam on ALL - Android TV media players at the moment . The Mi Box being a prime example - it cannot do any DD+ > DD audio downmixing at all.

Do not be fooled by (Scam) Marketing technobable !

If you want guaranteed Dolby anything - and proper licensing and Dolby audio implementation on any media players stick to the mainstream brands - Apple, Amazon & Roku.

The core question is do you trust Xiaomi any longer ?

I certainly do not, they frankly have no idea about how to test and distribute Firmware or provide support to mainstream consumers.

Xiaomi are basically a company now shifting mini media player boxes, with numbers in the millions - they care very little about anything else. It's all a numbers and profit margin game.

The Jetstream 4K Ultra HD running v8.1 Oreo is a better budget device with far better connectivity these days - it remains to be seen how their ongoing support will be.

if you're in the united states, buy the mi box S at walmart. you have 90 days to return it. use the shit out of it and see if it does everything you want without problems. if not, return it and wait for something better.

Would have been great if the Mi Box S had this SoC. Oh well, guessing we'll get something in 2019 with it. Cortex A73s with the G52 will be a big performance bump.

honestly if Mi Box can get google cert, and playback amazon prime 4k, and actually did some R&D and used the s912 it would the most popular box as long as they keep the bootloader unlocked and developer friendly because i know they could and mostly likely will bombed the software, and let the guys at XDA and Freaktab work their magic.

i have s905x2 Sunwell T95Q, and mi box s. Definitively, Mi box s working much better (iptv/kodi/mplayer pro HW+, etc), it play all formats, no reboots/etc. T95Q have latest cpu & good memory & usb 3.0, however, firmware extremely buggy. At this time I not recommend you these new s905x2 boxes.

if you dont need usb 3.0 or root, buy the mi box.

if you are not in a hurry, then wait for potential S905X2/S922 ATV (not vanilla Android) boxes that have the same licence levels as the MiBox3, eg. for netflix HD/4K etc etc

On that note make up ur mind if you want vanilla android (only netflix SD etc) wich is usually rootable or android TV (licensed for netflix HD etc) wich except for the shield tv is usually not rootable afaik (mixbox certainly is not rootable even after almost 2 years of people trying to crack it)

(i own a mibox3 and im very happy with it/ Kodi (Untouched UHD BD Movies), Netflix HD, Amazon 4K, Videogame Emulators etc works great but i cant attach my external usb 3.0 drive to it where i store all my UHD BD isos and neither can i share them in the gigabit lan via sambadroid because that would require root, therefore, boxes that HAVE such features are very interesting budged NAS alternatives!!! )

I have a Mi Box. Don't buy one.
