What is the best app for opening video on Android TV via from NAS or LAN via SMB or other protocol?

by juzzle

Hi all, I have a TCL55C2US (4k HDR) which has become choked with garbage apps (auto installed by TCL) and about which I am generally discouraged about Android TV (shocking experience, see post here ). Becuase of the propensity of Android TV to slow down systems, I am looking for a Android TV app (supporting Android TV 6.0) which allows browsing of a file servers (Windows Home Server 2011) and opening of the file. Importantly, I don't want to have to enter network credentials each time (which most require you do to).

The only application I found out there that can do this so far is Mix (which I can no longer locate in the App Store due to an overwhelming quantity of crapware).

What app do you use to open files/videos/movies from your NAS or LAN server?

Really liking FX nice clean interface and easy to use with a remote. It’s a couple bucks for the full version but worth it IMO.

Kodi and MrMC can both save network credentials. Just turn off the library/metadata menu options and just use the videos -> files option (unless you want to do a neat cover art/summary setup), and add the share. It should prompt for the username and password, and save them for next time.

I use Kodi for my whole collection on my NAS and VLC sometimes for a quick video off a flash drive.

The key to Kodi is that you can scan your whole movie and tv collections and it'll show up like your own personal netflix with cover art, descriptions, etc.

As others said, Kodi. Else, you might want to check Archos media player and Movian
