Nice new Android TV device launching this month, the WeTek air

I used to work for WeTek. Kind of. I was in another country doing remote tech support, but I met people at the main office once, and they seemed like good people. Small company, they did a lot to try and impress google with their pre-ATV products (proper certifications, licensing, etc) so it's really nice to see Google finally give them a shot at an ATV device.

I have no idea if the box will be good or not, and it was a long time (in the tech world) ago that I had worked there, so this comment should not be seen as an endorsement. Just a "hmm, interesting, wish then luck" kind of thing. That being said, they took the remote design seriously, and it looks really great.

...but with a $180 price tag why not get the shield? The (almost 4 year old) Shield out specs this "soon to be released" box too. I mean, come on, 2gb of RAM?

That's a nice looking remote. I hope this happens. We need more players.

Please remember these are the same guys that sold the Play2 and pissed off their own user community.

The software is broken and missing basic functionality (eg. channel reordering). They promised a bugfix release more than one year ago, and even asked forum users to sign up for a private beta, just to never contact them again.

Btw, the Play 2 is quite the same box: S905 (no D), 2GB Ram, half the storage space (8GB), interchangeable tuner.

The new air seems overpriced at 180$ with these specs and the possibility of getting the same lacking support.

I owned a Wetek Play 2 box. Bought it because it was one of the few Android boxes that could do 1080p Netflix and because it had a ATSC tuner built in for my antenna.

I owned the box for about a month and decided it wasn't for me. They had a return period for full refund but I had to pay shipping. Since they were based in Europe, shipping back there, even the slowest ground speed was going to cost me around $40. So I decided to sell it on eBay for $10 less than what I paid for it. Sold pretty fast also.

Keep in mind about Wetek. They are mainly in business for the European customers so Europeans come first. This is why their boxes come with satellite TV support and ATSC is an added option which most likely costs extra.

I own a wetek hub. Absolute disaster. Would never buy a wetek device again
