Mi Box International (mdz-16-ab) Oreo Update details and Bug tracker (clean version)

by Generalmilk

I’m a mi box user in US and have a direct communication channel to Xiaomi Mi Box’s engineers. I will do my best to bridge the users here who have troubles with Oreo firmware with the dev team. Please let this thread be drama free.

Whenever I have new conversations with the devs, I will update here. They include but are not limited to what the devs are working on, which bugs were fixed and which bugs were discovered (by users in the comments). Keep in mind it is very hard to fix a bug if the dev can't reproduce it, so if you are providing new bugs, please be as detailed as possible. I have helped them fixed several bugs so far, I think the key is very detailed reproducing steps.

Update 11/06:

  1. The auto frame rate switching is top priority now. They already noticed wrxtasy’s hint, but fix is not trivial. Kernel fix is easy but a lot of modules in Android framework and Android hardware layers need to be changed. They also need to work with Amlogic on this so a lot of things are not in their control. This fix will not be included in the current OTA4 update, but likely in next OTA5
  2. Android P is planned with google! Development scheduled to start end of this year (likely). I think they are a bit short of hands since they also have Mi Box S to work with, but they did not give up this box.
  3. Please join https://www.facebook.com/groups/mibox/ the devs are there. It already has 7k users. I also introduced this place to the devs, hopefully in the future, the problem posted here is likely getting through.

Update 11/07: OTA4 RC2 is out for beta testers

Update 11/08: It looks like the OTA is approved by google and now everyone has received it.

Oreo OTA4 (2396) Fixed the following issues:

  1. when mi box wakes up from sleep, the user specified resolution such as 4k@60 might change to 480p or other low resolution.
  2. When user changes refresh rate in settings, it only changes display refresh rate, but system still think it is under the original refresh rate, resulting multiple apps misbehave, including Kodi. Kodi won’t play 1080p@24 video smoothly if user switches to 24fps in settings, unless reboot.
  3. WiFi stability.
  4. Google assistant recognition quality

The devs are testing the DD+ dropout issue but they can't reproduce it. I reproduced it on my soundbar, I may spend sometime to help this weekend.

If anyone still have the mibox won't wake up issue in the latest build 2396 after reset , please leave comments. I don't think this issue has been passed on yet, and it is really hard to reproduce. I had it a few times on 2303 and 2179, but none in recent month. Then again I'm using an IR remote to wake the box up.

Update 11/10

People who has won’t wake up after sleep issue, please do me a favor:

  1. Install “Mi Remote” app and connect with the box. Next time when you are having wake up issue, try if the app can wake the box up.
  2. Tell me your network environment. Such as WiFi 2.4G/5G and channel number, having Bluetooth speaker/headphone connected or not.

Update 11/12

A test build to fix the wake up issue is prepared by the devs. Will collect a few serial numbers from the comments to do the targeted test.

Update 11/16

test build sent to a few testers who has the issue and passed SN to me. Let's wait and see their feedback.

Update 11/18

According to the feedback of testers, build 2405 does fix the wake up issue, will inform the dev to push the build to beta test and then public.

Devs also fixed some DD+ issues, but the dropout issue on Netflix and amazon is not fixed. They still cannot reproduce the issue. They are using Yamaha AVR as a test device.

Devs have addressed a issue from user regarding no 4K playback on Netflix. Netflix has provided the following information to the users: When the device resolution is equal or below 4K@30hz, Netflix will not supply 4K video. It is only supplied above 4k@50hz

Update 11/28

I have been busy and can only check my Mi Box once in a few days. A few bugs got delayed in report, so please use the FB group, and if you are a beta tester, use:

credit /u/srfteixeira

I noticed if the box has been off a few days, it won't wake up (2415 build), reported to the devs :(

GldRush98

I have been plagued by the won't wake up issue. I updated my Mi Box last night, so I should know fairly soon if it is fixed or not.

Edit: it powered on after being in standby all day with a single press of the power button on the remote. I'm not calling this fixed yet, but I honestly don't remember when the last time it did that was. Slightly hopeful right now.

Edit2: Hope has been crushed. Woke up this morning, Mi Box locked up. No amount of power or back button mashing would wake it up. Had to pull power. Unreal they still haven't figured this out.

pj228

Android P is planned? Are you pulling our chain? I could hardly believe we got Oreo.

Roseysdaddy

I'd just love to not have to unplug my mibox every day when I get home from work so it will come on.

dickalan1

The FB group is saying to join I need to subscribe to this guys Youtube channel? Wat? https://imgur.com/a/cLcSRg4

This kinda chips away at the whole credibility thing that's being presented here. Just seems spammy.

DanielErikson

People who has won’t wake up after sleep issue, please do me a favor

I'll preface this by mentioning in advance that I have not yet reset the MiBox this time after doing the last current update, so feel free to disregard this. However, the issues seem to be consistent between versions, and I'll do the reset if requested and I have time to setup everything again.

MiBox Model

MDZ-16-AB

WiFi Network

Running networks on both 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz. MiBox connects through 5Ghz network.

2.4Ghz

  • Control channel: 4
  • Avg. Num. connected devices: 3

5Ghz

  • Control channel: 100
  • Avg. Num. connected devices: 3

Paired Bluetooth devices

  • Xiaomi Remote
This is the one that comes with the MiBox. Always connected.

  • Xiaomi Redmi Note 4
Phone, always within range. Paired because of the Android TV app for mobile phones.

  • Microsoft Wedge Mobile Keyboard
Paired, but physically disconnected 99% of the time.

Not-paired bluetooth devices (but within range)

  • Xiaomi MiBand 3
Always paired with the phone, within range when the phone is.

  • Aukey BR-C1 Audio Receiver
Paired with a laptop. Always within range.

Wake-up behavior (w/ different apps/devices)

  • MiBox remote (the OEM one)
This one is the trickiest. In my experience, the app be able to turn the MiBox on if the box has been on within the previous hours. After the MiBox has been off for a certain time, the remote will be unable to wake it up. I want to say 24h seems to be a safe threshold to replicate the bug, but I'm not entirely sure.

  • Mi Remote (phone app)
Always wakes up the box instantly.

  • IR remote (generic)
Always wakes up the box instantly. This is a OneForAll IR remote with learning capabilities, IR signals were copied from the Mi Remote app.

  • Android TV (phone app)
Can also wake up the MiBox (by pressing the back button on the app). I'm unsure if the app is connecting via WiFi or Bluetooth correction: I got the wake up bug again: MiBox wouldn't wake up with the included remote. I disabled WiFi on my phone to ensure the Android TV app would be connecting with bluetooth, it woke up the MiBox right up. ; can test it later if necessary .

  • Google Assistant
Can consistently turn the MiBox off. Can turn the MiBox on only for a few minutes after the box has been turned off. After about 5mn or so, assistant will not be able to turn the box on (it says it has done it, but the box never comes on). No issues with other commands.

Possibly related issues / indicators

And behaviors that seem to be related to the issue.

  • Google Cast (embedded Chromecast)
The MiBox occasionally vanishes as a cast target. The behavior is inconsistent. For the most part the MiBox seems to always be a target when the MiBox is on. When it is off, it seems to be a coin flip whether it'll be available or not. Turning the box on will re-enable it as a target, for a while (again I want to say 24h but I'm not sure).

  • AirPlay (via AirPin Pro app)
Seems to work flawlessly, with the MiBox always being n available target even when it has been off for a couple days. Casting audio from a Macbook Pro will always make the MiBox to play audio via 3.5" audio jack, analog (as expected, it's connected to external speakers), without turning it on. It just works. AirPlay'ing the screen will wake up the MiBox consistently, and then AirPlay the video/share theh screen without a hitch.

Thoughts:

The behavior can be inconsistent.

  • IR works flawlessly. Bluetooth seems to work fine, except for the OEM remote. I have yet to try waking up the box with the bluetooth keyboard. I have not debugged whether the Android TV app is connecting via bluetooth or WiFi, but that could help narrow issues down. Android TV app wakes the MiBox just fine, even when the included remote is unable to.

  • The MiBox only seems to have trouble being woken up with its OEM remote after it has been off/on standby for a long time. I estimate 24h should be enough to replicate the bug, but could be longer. Other users seem to be having trouble within shorter timeframes.

  • The fact that AirPlay works fine, and would cause the box to be woken up via WiFi, is a bit weird. Obviously the MiBox isn't hanging up while off, given that AirPlay wakes it up and AirPlay requires a third party app to be installed. However, Google Assistant fails, so I have no idea.

Edits:

  • MiBox is connected to a generic monitor (LG Ultrawide), no CEC

  • There are ZigBee devices within range, if I understand correctly they also operate on 2.4Ghz (same as BT). I have 6 ZigBee devices within range of the MiBox/Router. One controller and five "slaves" (Philips Hue lighting)

  • No other 2.4Ghz operating devices within range that could cause disruption (i.e: microwaves, 2.45Ghz?!), except for a couple neighbor's routers with very weak signal range

  • All devices are connected to APC surge protector powerstrips

Please pass along my thanks that the latest OTA updated worked great and fixed a couple little issues I was having. It stalled during upgrade but a power cycle got past the issue (thankfully!)

However, I can't seem to get sideloading to work however. No apps are ever 'able to perform this action' including ES file explorer that always gets mentioned. Has this been effectively disabled in Oreo?

The auto frame rate switching is top priority now. They already noticed wrxtasy’s hint, but fix is not trivial. Kernel fix is easy but a lot of modules in Android framework and Android hardware layers need to be changed. They also need to work with Amlogic on this so a lot of things are not in their control. Yes... yes...

" I think they are a bit short of hands since they also have Mi Box S to work with, but they did not give up this box." - whilst im happy there are still working on this im not sure that really cuts it as its the same box aside from a slight Wifi and BT tweak

regex1884

Dolby DTS does not work for 6 months. Completely unacceptable.

milespeters

Is this legit? The facebook page looks like someones personal promo page.

ccnoo

Any updates?

battierpeeler

anyway they can make an app that users can choose to download that will record logs and we could then send to them after something (bugs, crashes, wifi being crap on oreo, whatever) happens?

ds22x

Sooooo.... Any updates on this?

Farhanito

This box gone AWOL from network when sleeping. Ping unreachable and unavailable as Google cast target. At this point, Mi Remote app doesn't detect my mi box. WiFi is 5ghz.

EDIT: It woke up instantly when using IR remote (I'm using broadlink rm2).

ds22x

And so this has, unsurprisingly, died out yet again.

PalebloodSky

I have fairly consistent wake-up issues when pressing the power on the remote. Often have to press power a bunch of times and wait for it to wake-up (takes maybe 10 seconds). If this came earlier might not have ordered the NVIDIA Shield TV on sale for $140.

EDIT: the update installed - build 2396.

MRcina_vulgaris

Hi, what about audio out of sync problem in netflix, youtube....

Its a big isue.

is it finaly solved?

hayat216

Thx you, any update?

keroma

Hi,

I still getting mi box netflix error tvq-pm-100. I bought a HDMI spitter to bypass the checking already. But the error is still there whatever i do. Any solution? I am tired of this player.

Reddukks

Please join https://www.facebook.com/groups/mibox/ the devs are there.

Upon which you're asked to "answer a couple questions," one of which is:

HI Guys! Help my youtube channel grow. Subscribe to my channel at https://www.youtube.com/unimodem Type YES if you have already subscribed.Thanks.

Smells like scam to me. I think not.

Meanwhile, I wonder what "the devs'" advice is to somebody whose MiBox their code has utterly bricked? As in: No display whatsoever?

olerocker66

It appears CEC doesn't work well with this release. In 2303 when closing the TV the Mibox would also go to sleep and waking the Mibox would open the TV.

Now in 2396 that does not happen anymore.

dekomote

I'm not really sure that the switching off CEC really switches it off. They should check this too. I have my CEC switched off because the box messes up my chain and makes my soundbar not listen to CEC commands from the TV for some reason, so I have it disabled on the box. But until i physically disconnect the box from HDMI/Power, the soundbar doesn't react. This happens only if the box is connected. I failed to see this behavior with any other devices (RPi3, Amazon Fire Stick) with enabled CEC.

pjgowtham

Netflix 4k not working on my 4k TV even though my TV support 4k @60hz, HDR 10. I can only see max 4k30hz on the display settings.

Maxrunner

Any predictions for the build 2405 for general users?

Metro222

Since Amlogic already relesed source code of Android TV 8.1 and Android TV 9 here http://openlinux.amlogic.com/Android/Mbox

Why it will take Xiaomi sooo long to upgrade our Mi Box 3 to Android TV 9?

emre1393

Mi box's remote can't wake up device after long sleep, but only remote can not do this. Other accessories like bluetooth/usb mouse or keyboard can wake up Mi box.

oroboros74

Just out of curiosity: What new features can we expect in Android P for the Mibox (and Android TV)?

Tirpaud

Do you know if I can manually download the firmware ? My Mibox has a lot of wifi issues, and the OTA update download is extremely slow...

arghness

I still have DD+ dropouts with my receiver in Kodi and Google Play Movies (eg with the free movie Sintel).

DD in Kodi doesn't have dropouts.

Sound setting on the MiBox is set to "auto", connected via HDMI to a Yamaha RX-V467 receiver. The receiver shows all speakers flashing off and back on when there is a dropout. If I watch the same section again, it might dropout in a different part. I didn't get any dropouts before updating to Oreo. I'm running build 2396 now. If there's anything I can do to help track this down, please let me know.

psxlover

I bought a box the other day, and after I updated I noticed that after a few minutes of watching Netflix the loading would come up and it wouldn't start the video again (I think if I left it long enough it would throw an error.

The issue was not the Wifi connection, cause even though the router Ihave is crap, after that happened the other apps would fail to load too, but the issue would go away if I restarted, or sometimes if I changed various settings in android tv. It looks more like as if the ram is filled or something.

I did a reset of the settings, and I was able to see a couple of episodes without aby issue. But when I connected again my google account the issue appeared again. I let it update all apps and then disconnected my google account, and it seems to work again.

Has anyone else encountered it, and do you know what is causing it? Perhaps one of the sync options that is on by default?

Imitck

Anyone noticed that sometimes there is white/colored pixel in top-left of the screen? Restarting device makes that dissapear, but that pixel keeps showing after some period of time.

t3n86

hi can i know where can i manually download the firmware?

venioni

@Generalmilk can you please tell the devs of xiaomi mi box to build a generic system.img to unbricked the mi box 3 international devices or give us a solution to fixed the mi box 3 mdz international ?

marvinorman

I'm still getting red artifacts on Netflix, as you can see from this link: http://imgur.com/vpM3mAj

My mind remote app won't find any device. They're in both same wifi but I don't know if they're on same frequency type.

Does someone here have experienced issues with extended WiFi networks (WiFi repeaters) after the last update (2396)? I was using a WiFi extender and after updating to the latest 2396 I can't see my repeater anymore nor connect to it by giving the SSID. I am missing something here? Is there any particular option to see an extended network? It's very strange because I can see the Network and connect to it on my PC (Windows) and Mobile-Phone (Android 8.1) but not in the Mi Box. I have also reverted to V2167 and V2179 and even tried a different WiFi Repeater but no change... I can't connect anymore to the Network generated by the WiFi-Extender... Any idea or suggestion?

Hi General Milk, i would like to report: after updating to latest Oreo OTA4 (2396) my mibox has been experiencing wifi instability. When playing form samba share, it just stops the video randomly around 30 mins and i cannot connect to the box using android tv remote from my phone. I verified using another device to confirm the samba share is still accessible, and no other network device experienced dropouts, no other configuration even on devices was done, just the update. PS. i was not experiencing the dropouts before this update. im already on static ip configuration before.

tried rebooting the device, but not yet factory reset. Thanks and hope to hear from you soon.

ppitogrill0

Anyone having connection issues with mi remote app and mibox? Mi remote app won't connect vía WiFi and Google's android tv remote app connects vía bluetooth but won't connect vía WiFi. Mibox recently OTA upgraded from version 6 to version 8 (2396). In version 6 both apps would Connect vía WiFi.

Panther90

Anybody else having problems with Amazon Prime video since the update? One episode will play and then stop on the second. Only fix is restarting the box. Obviously irritating doing it after every episode.

TemporaryKiwi

Hi!

I have the latest build: 2396, and after (many) reset i still have the issue: mibox won't wake up.

But also the wifi seems to dont work well . I have 50Mbps at home but Mi Box max speed is always 10-15Mbps, with Netflix for internet streaming or with Kodi/Plex for local streaming from my Qnap, i can't watch movies the transfer speed is low, very low .

With Pc/Mac/Tv/etc.. internet works well, the last update broke something on Mi Box.

jeffhearth

Is the OTA update not available for MM users?

glassbase86

2 of my boxes had the wake up issue and required unplug to reset to get working today. Both are used daily and would have been used less than 12 hours prior than experiencing this. Both on 2396. Button mashed enter, power and home buttons and they wouldn’t wake.

ryanmi

I didnt want to make a new thread over this related question: Does anyone know where I can get the latest official / stable (non-beta) firmware for the Mi Box?

FreakDeckard

The auto frame rate switching is top priority now. They already noticed wrxtasy’s hint, but fix is not trivial. Kernel fix is easy but a lot of modules in Android framework and Android hardware layers need to be changed. They also need to work with Amlogic on this so a lot of things are not in their control. This would be so GREAT

Hello, any news?

shmox75

I've recently bought my mi box is driving me crazy and made me regret buying it because of wake up issue :(

AlexShika

Hello, regarding the wake up issue, for me it seems that is a pairing problem with the remote. I've just done the step for pairing the remote when the box was in sleep (back button (arrow) + home button(circle) for few seconds, no sound like when the box is awake) and after that one press of the power button and the box wakes up.

tupacsoul

Is there any way to fix deinterlacing trouble? Jetstream has the same CPU and doesn't have this problem.

cpc2

If anyone still have the mibox won't wake up issue in the latest build 2396 after reset

After a factory reset? I think I'd rather deal with that bug occasionally than reinstalling and setting up all the apps. It's such a weird bug, because when it happens it can be woken up with the "Mi Remote" app on the phone, but not with the actual Mi Box remote. Or is that because the Mi Box remote only uses Bluetooth instead of IR?

vittamit

Good evening, I have a problem with my Mi Box 3 Global (model MDZ-16-AB) with Android Oreo 8.0, if I put it on standby after a few hours goes off and to turn it on again need to unplug and insert the plug. I have contacted Xiaomi several times but I always tell myself to wait for the next update (in the meantime almost 3 months have passed). I've already reset the device 2 times, but nothing has changed.Someone has solved this problem, please help me. Thanks.

vittamit

Good morning. Please tell me where to download the beta version 2415 (or higher) for the Mi Box 3 (MDZ-16-AB). Thanks a lot.

ANDROOOUK

my box keeps restarting, sometimes every 20secs.. Xiaomi MC store on aliexpress have told me to wait for the next OTA update which will be released in the next few days? this is after failing to update via USB stick (because it turns itself off before it installs)...

Can anyone confirm whether there is an update coming and how that update can be installed in less than 20 secs? because i don't see how it can, i think they just don't want to replace my unit.

atifsh

oh i wish i was a beta tester... this device is shit! on Oreo 8.0. i have emby and plex services and boy this device have issues with it. i use kodi, plex and emby most of the times and this box with native plex and emby is nothing but pain.

plays commentary instead of normal audio. no dd+ or DTS pauses all the time while playing so unwatchable. never plays direct, always transcode.

i thought my services of emby and plex is culprit be or my internet. but than i tried my old x96 box (s905x) put a custom atv rom (7.1.2) on it and ...

every single issue i have on mibox is fixed on x96. playing side by side,

*same movie playing commentary plays fine on x96.

*same movie doing play pause routine on mibox plays fine on x96.

*same movie that doesn't play direct on mibox, plays direct on x96.

*same movie which cant play / convert from dd+ or trueHD converted / plays fine on x96.

list goes on n on....

vittamit

Goodmorning everyone. The Xiaomi about solving all the bugs in Mi Box 3 (not S) is behaving as if it were one of those unknown economic brands that the web is full of. But Xiaomi is the fourth producer in the world, so it is inconceivable that after almost six months still have not released an update. It's a shame !

pjgowtham

Need explanation on whats taking them so long

Requesting for bootloader unlockability because of poor official support. What policies are preventing xiaomi from giving us bootloader unlock.
