Mi Box (MDZ-16-AB) upgrade from 6.0.1 (699) to 8.0 (2396)

by aspartam1987

After a couple of weeks of research I bought a Mi Box last week. I was advised not to upgrade to Oreo because of the problems, but to update to build 1901.

I wanted to see how the system runs with the purchased firmware before I do anything.

I wanted an Android box for three reasons. I have a Plex media server machine with a DVB-S/S2 card so I use it for Plex, Kodi with TVheadend and YouTube.

YouTube did freeze all the time (I did update all the apps in the Play Store), sometimes waking up the device did not work and had some problems with HDMI-CEC ( Philips 32PFL4007H/12 ).

Yesterday I saw that my box was downloaded the Oreo update and only waits for a reboot to install it. I did read about before that there was some auto upgrades for some users. I want to know what and when is happening to my devices so I decided to upgrade.

The procedure was:

  1. Factory reset from settings (not in recovery)
  2. Setup the box for the first time
  3. Turn off auto-update in Play Store and remove the updates if did already
  4. Download upgrade in the settings (no USB drive attached)
  5. Reboot to install
  6. Factory reset from settings (not in recovery)
  7. Setup the box for the first time

I did install the updates in Play Store and turned off auto-update.

Kodi, Plex and YouTube works as it should. I did not have any issues with them. HDMI-CEC works great. With 2.4GHz Wi-Fi I had some dropouts so I changed to 5GHz and now everything is OK.

I thought, I should share my experience with people who may thinking about upgrade.

Also have to say that I did NOT tried Netflix, Hulu, RedBull TV... Only the mentioned apps I use.

After some little issues with Oreo, especially not always turning back on without clicking power button 20x on the remote, I gotta say build 2396 has been excellent for me so far. Zero issues.

I have two mibox 3 with the first oreo release. Yesterday I saw that both boxes had downloaded an update of 693 mb, without my permisson and are waiting for a reboot to apply the update.

I don t know what to do. I do not want to update. My 2 boxes work ok. I read a lot of threads of bricked boxes updating to the last oreo release.

It's been working well for me without a factory reset. I will do one if I find issues.

I just hope they fix their audio implementation to force 5.1 passthrough via optical and do the DD+ to DD down mixing properly so Netflix works with multi channel audio.

HDMI cec not working on sony hx75 series, even after factory reset. Tested new cables too.

I just got a replacement MiBox from Xiaomi. It came with Android 6.0.1. When I go to upgrade it says it's up to date. Is there a hold on the new version? Can you force an upgrade?

RTL 8153 ethernet usb lan card still can't work

how about UGREEN AX88179 ?

The home button on remote is not working. Is it a known issue? I recall it was working before the update.

I'm on 2396 and 5g barely gets 40 Mbps when before I always got the 100 Mbps. Is this still an issue for the wifi speeds???

I didnt want to make a new thread over this related question: Does anyone know where I can get the latest official / stable (non-beta) firmware for the Mi Box?
