TechHive - Xiaomi Mi Box S review: This isn't doing Android TV justice

by BiggussDikkuss

A pretty honest look IMHO at the Mi Box S vs the competition in late 2018...

I agree while parts of that review are not accurate, some points in that review are valid when comparing media players in late 2018.

Mi Box S vs the competition - I ask these questions, especially since the 2016 Mi Box release...

- has broadcast TV deinterlacing issues been fixed ? - NO - Live Channels still does not work properly.

- has DD+ 5.1 Netflix audio been fixed ? - NO - it's actually gotten worse.

- has Dolby audio support for downmixing been fixed ? - NO

- has auto frame rate switching been implemented ? - NO

- has Chromecasting support improved vs actual Chromecast hardware ? - NO

EDIT:

- can you use Xiaomi very own USB3 > Gigabit adapter ? - NO

- has Firmware testing improved ? - NO, users are guinea pigs.

- have Xiaomi listened to user complaints and taken sensible suggestion onboard ? - NO, not until there was a recent Mi Box community backlash after devices were rendered unusable after the very first Oreo update.

Device speed improvements have come about due to Android TV Oreo optimisations from Google. Nothing to do with Xiaomi.

Even if you do not like the GUI of Amazon's new 2018 Fire TV Stick 4K, you have to acknowledge Amazon have actually listened to users of their Fire TV devices and made impressive improvements.

They also act like grown ups and properly implement audio and video standards so their devices work with old and new A/V hardware. They also do not blatantly lie about supporting Dolby Audio in their advertising compared to what Xiaomi are getting away with.

I suppose this the reality Android TV users have to put up with if they want the cheapest device on the market at $60 from a Chinese seller.

Have Xiaomi moved this segment of the Android TV market forward in the last 2 years ? - NO

Shitty review. Guy blames the box for apps not switching to 60fps. Knocks it for only having CEC-volume support and no "personal listening" support (it's called Bluetooth, and it works fine).

The mibox s has problems, yes, but this review didn't even mention them.

Mi Box S is not as bad as this review makes it out to be. For $59.99 you can't expect Nvidia Shield TV performance as that device cost three times the price of the new Mi Box S I have both of these devices and their both do what I want them to do. If Amazon new 4K Stick had the same clean interface I would have brought that but that home screen just awful.

Same box they released 2 years ago but with two new buttons on the remote, that's all I need to hear to judge this product and brand.

Total stooge...

This is the same schmuck who wrote about last year's MWC in Barcelona as if he were there on site.
In actuality, he was still in Cincinatti, faking it.

Had some less than factual content severely dissing Xiaomi in general and specifically misrepresenting MiBox and new Mi Laser projector features and release schedules.

I think the closest he got to the MWC was reading the press releases.

Let's blame China. Nvidia uses same old hardware on Shield TV on latest update, but it's Nvidia all is good.
