Is the Mi Box a good purchase right now?

by borgqueenx

Lots of bugs and issues can be found on this reddit.

After some research a while back, i bought the h96 max plus, and its a piece of shit in internet connecivity. im getting about 1mB per second tops, sometimes 600-800kBps. My connection at home and 3 other devices in the same place are getting way better results with our 150mbps connection.

So im wondering if the Mi Box is a good purchase right now? I see they update often to fix bugs. I wonder if wifi is any good and if 4k youtube playback is good.

Edit: I am not interested in the shield as i want to connect it directly to a projector. So that means powered by usb. Alot of boxes allow this, but not the shield. The shield is also way more expensive.

Mi Box works pretty well right now with the latest Oreo update. I'd say yea the Mi Box S at $60 is a good buy and fwiw the remote is much better than the Shield TV remote.

I've got one and haven't had any issues. The Oreo update was a large improvement to the UI and the software updates are pretty regular.

I have three MiBox 3 at home, all updated to latest Oreo (from early November), and they all work perfectly. No crash anymore, very stable, no visible bug for my usage (IPTV via Molotov, Kodi with samba shares, Netflix, YouTube...) in 1080p. For the price it's a very good hardware.

If you can still find the first one at Walmart for $30, that's a great buy. Nothing out there will beat it for $30.

The current one for $60 isn't bad either since it does have 8.1 on it.

If you just stream then it's a good buy. If you plan on playing games or using other CPU intensive apps, get the shield.

Editted the post that a shield is not for me.

MiBox is good, Shield is better. I own both and have had minor problem with Mibox but it has always worked, seems even better after latest updates. I bought MiBox S a couple weeks back and returned it, no better than the older one and seems locked a little tighter for mods

OwnStorm

I have MiBox and it works good enough. A little slow but works fine with 1080p.

But after looking at nVidia Shield, I changed my mind. See few reviews.

Shield comes with awesome hardware, native gaming controller with headphone jack. All this for steal price less than $200. Someone posted here, he got Shield+Google Home mini just for $127.

I am going to dump Mi Box by next year for next version of Shield, if it comes.

I decided to buy it on amazon so i can always return it if problematic. Saw good wifi results in reviews and youtube.

whyalwaysme2012

It's still the the best option for the price.

No. As the current owner of one, I would definitely not buy another.

Not sure why you would experience those kind of terrible wifi speed. Connect through 5GHz? And does your router support ac? I would try a firmware upgrade, then a factory reset, and then try to move the box around. Remember that the TV may work as a big shield i.e wifi blocker.

Try moving it near the router just to test the speed and realibility. You shouldn’t experience 1 mbit download.

I would also try the non 5GHz network just to test.

If nothing work; contact the store you bought it from.

And as you probably know; if you can use ethernet ALWAYS do so.

Considering the h96 isn't a real android box the mibox should be much better. I lean towards the shield though since it handles anything you throw at it. (Still waiting for DV though )

If you can't afford the Shield then yes, get the MiBox. But you may run into problems. Many users have different issues about their boxes, some with audio, some video, some with remotes, some with CEC.

I have a Vizio TV and the OG Mibox, no issues with my stuff ever so YMMV. If the Apple TV in the bedroom or the MiBox ever shit the bed I'll probably get a Shield, but for now the MiBox works just fine.

battierpeeler

don't listen to anyone about it working or not working. it works great for some and not so great for some. if you're in the US just go buy it at walmart and try it out for 90 days. you will know within the first week if the problems apply to you or not.

Be aware the Mi Box dies not do auto Frame Rate matching. The Shield does when using Apps like Plex, Kodi and Emby.

So if you live in the UK, Europe, Australasia that has lots of video content with a 25 / 50 fps frame rate you will experience video playback judder with the Mi Box manually set at 60Hz.

Taking that one step further, 24p Netflix content output at 60Hz. Some modern TV's can eliminate video judder with that combo. You cannot if you use 50Hz.

Ultimate the Apple TV 4K is a better fit if you value smooth video playback across a whole suite if Apps for those living in the UK, Europe and Australasia, because it had tvOS Frame Rate Matching.

PS: AMLogic chipset devices with decent AC WiFi can be powered via USB2 if you get the correct power cable. Do NOT connect 2.5" power sucking HDD's when doing so.

i received it today, and wifi speeds are 100mbps up and 100mbps down. but now upgrading firmware....

Lets see how it goes.

borgqueenx

Upgraded to latest version, and god i love this. full 150mbps up and down. airplay with airpin works amazingly smooth as well.

But i have yet to connect it to a 4k projector that will arrive later.

bowlcut

For what I do, its fine for me. I wouldnt use it as a living room device, I leave that to my shield. But for secondary use in a bedroom or kitchen or such...its fine. For me theres not much else out there that does both youtube and twitch without some shitty workaround or buying a 3rd party app or whatever. So as close to stock androidTV is my favorite thing about it.

The best WiFi at a cheap price is now on the new 2018 Fire TV Stick 4K. It does MIMO WiFi. (Dual or more antennas):

An external WiFi Antenna like you see on the Jetstream 4K Ultra will always be more reception sensitive vs an single internal antenna setup.

The question is can you now trust Xiaomi to get device Firmware correct ? Their track record with Oreo had been rocky to say the least.

I don't think so. Depending on where you're located, I'd be leaning towards the Jetstream 4K (US only, reviewed, people like it) or the Mecool KM9 (still unreviewed, just started shipping from China).

pjgowtham

Mi box doesn't handle 4k well for now. It will take another year for them to move from the current beta to stable by the looks of it.

The new fire TV stick is a huge improvement. 4k, Dolby vision, Atmos and what not. Except for the no voice search on YouTube and advertising interface. I would gladly buy the new stick instead of mi box s

regex1884

It will not do dolby DTS. If you have a soundbar or tv speakers you are fine. Anything else will not work.
