PSA: Mibox 3 with last update (2369?) just crapped the bed.... again.

by [deleted]

Gave Xiaomi the benefit of the doubt with the latest push of Oreo build 2369(?). I got about 2 or so weeks out of it this time. Yesterday it froze and boot looped at the Mi splash screen. Just a PSA for those of you with the Mibox 3. Not bothering with returns or factory resetting this go around. Just marking Xiaomi as a do not buy brand.

Counter anecdote; Had a Mibox at least a couple years now, minimal problems. For something I use for hours literally every day, and only paid $60 for, I'm very happy.

I've had one over a year and setup 2 others for friends and zero problems other than wont wake from sleep once in awhile. I wonder why so many people have issues, must be a problem with quality control.

Note: Since last update a couple weeks ago, I have not had any issue with wake up.

Both of these ine have been working great for two years now.

You sideloaded any apps? Sometimes apps not designed for android TV can screw it up

Cheap internal flash storage is failing.

I've got a Shield on my Christmas list, so hopefully only have to suffer through the Mi Box's constant lock ups for another month or so...

I'll take it off your hands from you if you don't want it anymore.

As someone else said, cheap flash storage failing. Only explanation for some people having no issues while others are all experience the same one. Mine completely crapped the bed today, after weeks of random not waking up and then being stuck in bootloops which were only fixed by doing a factory reset.

The last released version is 2396 (maybe you got the last two digits backwards or you got an older version I don't know) by the way and those issues are not a compelling reason to put xiaomi right away on a "do not buy brand" at all. I have owned several xiaomi's products over the years starting with a Mi2A to the redmi note 4 and 5, mi band 1, 1S, 3, power banks, yeelight, mi box and they are all great and well built products for their reasonable pricetag. Software has been lacking (and still is) at times but you could say the same thing for all major OEMs out there. You are just venting your frustration and it's understandable since it seems that your eMMC is failing. I have had a galaxy note 2 just die suddenly because of this (not supposed to be a cheap entry level product at the time ehh), it was known as a sudden death syndrome.

mi box works nice for me, especially since last update when they resolved sleep issues, but since Oreo they removed my language (maybe not even removed it's just not in the menu but box was in my lang after MM -> O update)
