Any way to install Mi Box S firmware on Mi Box 4?

by ams3401

Hello, I bought a Mi box 4 in China and brought it to the US couple months ago and it's just been sitting there since the first time I turned it on because everything is in Chinese.

I recently found out that they released the exact same device but in Black and Netflix and google voice button on the remote and named it as Mi Box S as an international model.

Will it ever be possible for Mi Box 4 users to install the same firmware from Mi Box S? (Android TV)

TL;DR

NO!!!

Best you could is to semi uncripple it by setting menus to English as in this link

http://en.miui.com/thread-391907-1-1.html

Still pretty much useless as lacks DRM and codecs to play much western streaming content

Try using a translator (microsoft trans) app to help with it then set it in english. Dont know if this works but try. Other then that rerurn the box or resell it..

Actually it seems possible. In fact, the same happened to Mi Box 3. Just take a look at those Chinese threads that emerge after the release of the international version with the exact same hardware but with google and you’ll find people literally flashing it to the international version with no problems. It does require some technical knowledge though. And if you’re not familiar with adb that kind of stuff, it can prove to be difficult.

Please use the only unique designation for specifying exactly which of the various MiBox models you are referring to.

MDZ-(2 digits)-(2 alpha characters)

Here are 3 examples of current Xiaomi boxes that can loosely be described as "MiBox 4":

MiBox 4---China market box released in April 2018. Covered in white plastic Model Number MDZ-21-AA

MiBox 4C---China market box released in April 2018. Covered in black plastic Model Number MDZ-20-AA

MiBox S---International official AndroidTV box released in November 2018. Black plastic cover Model Number MDZ-22-AB

This is but another example of confusion pervading the marketplace relating to obtuse naming conventions.

This confusion can lead to obfuscation and misunderstandingby uninformed and/or unethical sellers.

The ONLY way to be exact in pinpointing a Xiaomi MiBox is to use the precise model number shown on the bottom label of the actual device.

With 11 different "MiBox" models having been released there is great chance of confusion using descriptive terms like MiBox 3, MiBox 4, etc.

To even further confound the issue, the first international MiBox model MDZ16AB was identified in the "About" section of Settings menu as 'MiBox 3' !!!!!

Likewise, the name shown in "About" for the recently released MDZ22AB is 'MiBox 4' !!!!!

Nope. Just buy the correct device in the first place.

If it is truly the same chipset and theres no difference in spec at all then you can make a backup of your us system and flash it to non us box . but i dont know how. But look at the problem like you made the thing and you loaded the wrong software and now you just load the right 1. Like if you did it to ur phone with root and flash and yeah new phone.. But with the box...good luck with that . hope its not that hard to do...

Think like a dev, there sgould be ways to backup everything. Think sideload..

Hope this helps
