Android TV on new Amlogic processors

by LoudlyAnything

Are there any officially supported boxes (or even Tv) running the new Amlogic processors or are there any rumors about some coming out ?

Would really like a box with good google assistant integration especially thanks to an always-on microphone and the extra power would be quite handy.

Any thoughts? At the start of September, I was hoping for a new upgraded mi box but kinda have been a disappointment.

At the start of September, I was hoping for a new upgraded mi box but kinda have been a disappointment.

The way Walmart's supplier requirements go, there was no way the upgraded MiBox would be based on the S905Y2 or S905X2. They require the finished product to be in their hands months in advance while Amlogic was only showing off reference boards in September.

I think that the biggest upgrade is USB 3.0. Even with the S905Y2 lacking built-in Ethernet (completely), with USB 3.0, it can take advantage of GigE dongles. The question is whether the rest of the SoC can handle the throughput. The hardware encoder supporting 1080p60 H.264 and H.265 could allow for very interesting applications.

Simple answer: no

There are currently no certified Android TV devices with the new Amlogic.

So of course it's coming and some OEM like SDMC or SEI Robotics already have working devices. But it's not out yet to consumers.

My guess is that it will only work on Android 9.0. As this version isn't even out yet on the ADT-2...

There are a few uncertified boxes out there (check Gearbest/Geekbuying for 905X2). I wouldn’t advice you to buy them if you want ti use them with Android TV. I’m not sure how much faster the 905X2 is, and if you would feel «the power» or not. I think Android Pie (9) could be just as important. Google’s focus is to make it more stable and faster, especially for slower devices.

I found my S905X2 based KM9 is indeed faster than Mi Box, however it is not certified so no Chromecast. I rarely use Chromecast so it's OK for me :-)
