USB2Ethernet adapter for KD-55XE8505

by ElfenSky

So, today I have encountered a very unexpected problem. Though, after googling around I found that I am by far not the first nor will I likely be the fast.

I found out (the hard way) that my TV only has a 100Mbit Ethernet port and the WiFi speeds are similarly limited.

It's usually not a problem, but after using it for mostly gaming (have a PS4 Pro), I decided to try out it's full capabilities and get some 4K UHD HDR rips and try to play em using Plex.

And... well, what do you know? "Network speed insufficient to stream".

Given that this TV is running Android, I was wondering if there were any USB2.0toEthernet or USB3.0toEthernet adapters available that support it so I can stream those kinds of large files, or if it's a closed case of Sony (and, apparently, other manufacturers) being idiots?

Like I didn't even think to check what speed the ethernet port was before buying, because it honestly boggles my mind that such expensive electronics can have such limitations in 2017. If I knew it would'a been enough of a downside I would have chosen a different model :/ Oh well, now I know, I suppose.

You should still be able to play 4k HDR videos that are encoded with HEVC/H.265 acceptably at that speed. Make sure that Plex isn't doing any transcoding.

I think most tvs nowadays have a 100mb ethernet to save money. I have the next model up and have same limits as you. 4k-hdr streaming does work on 100mb ethernet but it uses a higher compression (android-tv 4k-hdr netflix works)

I'd like to know what suggestions you get too 😊

ALL Smart TV Manufacturers try and save as much money as possible, they really are only designed to network stream low bitrate Netflix, Prime Video, YouTube etc. so only come equipped with 100Mbit LAN or AC WiFi.

You need Gigabit Ethernet for 4K HDR Bluray Rips streaming, definitely so if lossless HD audio is also included in the stream - so people get a compatible USB3 > Gigabit adapter.

USB3 because the newer internal chipset in the adapter provides faster thruput, even if used on a USB2 port.

The question is do adapters like the popular Ugreen USB3 > Gigabit ones work on smart TV's ?

Have you tried Wifi? I’m getting faster speeds in my X800D with 5GHz AC.much faster speeds. But you need a router that supports it, and preferably nothing shitty stuff. I 2x Netgear R8000 (one in AP) that works fine.

The chipset won't handle the high bitrate 4k rips anyway, hence the 100mb Lan port. Don't waste your money.

If you're want to test it, just try playing it directly on the TV from a usb drive, you will see.

Personally I don't know a single AndroidTV TV that has a Gigabit port. For boxes, there is the Shield and the Jetstream.
