Best 1080 box that's not a Shield?

by Lyron-Baktos-

Currently have the low end Roku on our 2nd TV and wanting to change it to Android TV. I see the Jetstream is mentioned a lot but it's 4k and a bit more than what u want to spend. Is that the best non Should option? Anything else I need to look at?

So the only other Android TV device on the market that you haven't mentioned?

The sad reality is, only nvidia provides proper os updates and support.

Yes, the device is old by now, nvidia being the assholes they are, are still charging top money for it, but no other android device provides what they do.

So, if you want android tv, best option is nvidia.

Mind you, i pretty much end on the same conclusion, even though i hate nvidia as a company, for all the shady shit they do, but ended buying the shield tv, because nothing else offers the same.

Frankly, if you aren't using a Shield you may as well just stay with the Roku.

My main boxes are Shields but run Fire Tv's in other rooms. If you don't mind Fire TV interface, look at the new 4k Fire Stick. Great device and remote, which you can also pair to the Shield.

My other choice would be a Mi or Jetstream and simply return it if you aren't happy with it.

I've got 2 Mi Box's at home, yet i'd recommend getting the new Fire TV 4k stick. Much more reliable, and transcodes DD+ > DD if you have an older receiver which doesn't support DD+.

Also framerate switching is supported, and while not working very well in Kodi atm, at least the option is there.

Also, the remote is very good, love the new volume and power buttons for controlling things.

Stream+ is worth a look, although you do have to sideload Netflix and Prime. It uses Live Channels that is currently beta testing expanding the free guide out to two weeks. It's $99 right now, but for DVR functions you need to add a powered external USB drive up to 2 TB.

The headaches these other cheap boxes cause is not worth the trouble get another Nvidia Shield otherwise you are going to be dealing with issues with these other boxes. If you willing to deal with those problems Mi Box S https://www.walmart.com/ip/Xiaomi-Mi-Box-S-4K-HDR-Android-TV-with-Google-Assistant-Remote-Streaming-Media-Player/677842593

Try the Jetstream Android tv from Walmart other than that I would say get a Roku

I think it depends on your usage patterns. Do you use streaming services? Which services? Do you need Kodi to play local-hosted content? Do you wan't to play/stream games?

If you just stream youtube and netflix and maybe some Kodi then MiBox will do fine (or even Amazon firetv). If you don't need Kodi but want to use iTunes then get Apple 4K TV. If you want to stream games, or do some emulation then you need a Shield TV or a PC...
