Bad user experience in stock Android TV - What now? TV: Philips 49" LED-TV 49PUS6432

by derp3000

I currently have a Philips 49" LED-TV 49PUS6432, which comes with AndroidTV out of the box. The TV itself is fine, however the Android TV user experience is quite bad.

It often lags heavily, both in apps and in the menus, and is overall a nuisance to use. In certain apps the framerate seems to be very low. Streaming the same apps from a phone using Chromecase Ultra yields much better picture quality and framerate.

What are my options in this case? I have of course downloaded and installed the latest software.

Are there any possibilities to root Android TV and gain improvement that way through third party software?

If not, are there any devices running Android TV that can be recommended? Ones that run software completely replacing my stock Android TV.

One tip I see recommended a lot is activating developer options and then limiting the amount of background processes to 4. This generally causes the TV to run quite a bit faster, and doesn't really take anything away from the user experience with regards to multitasking.

It makes quite a difference on my Sony TV. Without limiting background processes, even something as simple as turning the volume up or down comes with noticeable lag.

Get a Shield it runs Android TV great NVIDIA SHIELD TV https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01N1NT9Y6/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

There are other cheaper Android TV boxes but the Nvidia Shield is the best.

Did you upgrade to the latest firmware? I have a 6412 series TV hanging on the wall here, and it somehow had gotten into a state where it was stuck on a mid-2017 firmware.

I was able to resolve it by giving it a factory reset and plugging in a USB stick with a copy of the newest available firmware. This had made it way more responsive, and upgrading fixed a very annoying bug where it would switch to a view with the contents of the attached USB drive on each poweron. Might want to give that a try.

This is why you don't buy a TV for it's smart features. Buy a TV for it's picture and nothing else. (Well, maybe sound, if you don't have a good, separate audio system.) TVs will ALWAYS give you a bad experience. ALWAYS. They are slow and laggy and the OEMs drag their feet releasing patches and updates. In 2 years they will abandon your TV model hoping you'll buy a new TV, even though a good LCD can last a decade.

Just plan on buying a Shield or a MiBox . (On second thought, forget the MiBox. Just get the Shield. You won't regret it.)

I’m in the same boat with my Sony Bravia KD-55S8505C.

I have a Philips lder version and don't have lag issues.

Try to disable as much stuff as you can. There is a plost on this sub describing what you can do about it.

These TV's cannot be rooted, forget about it. But you can still get Developer Options in the usual way.

Otherwise just get an Nvidia Shield.

Hopefully when Oreo comes it'll improve things.

What do you think about performing a factory reset and limiting the number of apps installed? How many apps installed? The file sharing apps are suspected of slowing things down.
