Android TV LPCM Signal

by Jumpyer

Hi!

Maybe this is a dumb question but here it goes:

I have a Philips 55PUS6412 connected to a Sony HTRT-4 soundbar (via HDMI ARC).

When I connect my PS4 and cable box to the TV and I get 5.1 sound but it doesn't work with my Nintendo Switch. I've read that it's because of LPCM 5.1 and it got me wondering... is there a way/app for Android TV that converts the signal and outputs as AC3/DTS/Dolby?

Thanks!

That requires additional licenses so I'm certain most TVs won't support it.

Can't you connect the switch to soundbar and use HDMI passthrough there?

You need Dolby Audio Licence to be able to remix/downmix all audio to 5.1 Dolby Digital for output over HDMI ARC. You cannot transfer any more than 2.0 PCM or 5.1 AC3/DD/DTS over HDMI ARC.

Even the supposed Dolby Audio Licenced - Xiaomi Mi Box cannot do it simply because either Google or more likely Xiaomi have not bothered to implement that Dolby Licence and test it properly.

The Shield does not even have a Dolby Audio Licence. I suspect the Tegra chipset had to actually be licenced for Dolby audio right from the get go, and that is why the Nintendo Switch also has no Dolby audio downmixing capabilities either.

The Amazon Fire TV's and Apple TV's implement Dolby Audio support properly.
