Can anyone actually tell me why this thing sucks so much?

by Liamza2314

Hi all, I posted a while ago saying that my new x96 mini was behaving terribly, with games lagging and crashing and I was met by people who just kept telling me it isn't a real android tv

I know that, and I also know I don't have R1500 to spend on a Mi Box so I have to work with what I have

And despite having a quad core cpu, a pentacore gpu and 2gb of ram IT STILL SUCKS

And nobody has told me why

Does anyone actually know why these things behave so badly despite their specs

Like ffs, this is a whole subreddit dedicated to android boxes, surely someone has an answer

Wrong sub.

shellbross

It's dedicated subreddit for Android TV, which is a different OS than regular Android, not for Android boxes . Try on the regular Android subreddit you'll have better luck.

No, this is a whole subreddit devoted to AndroidTV devices. Which is not what you have.

If you want to know why these things behave so badly, it's because they're cheap garbage produced by fly-by-night operations in China that don't give a flying fuck at a rolling doughnut about the user experience. Don't buy them. They're terrible. Buy an actual AndroidTV device instead.

With those cheap Android boxes that never get updated by the manufacturer, you're better off getting into the world of ROM flashing and hoping performance improves.

Try this for your X96: https://forum.xda-developers.com/android-stick--console-computers/amlogic/rom-x96-mini-tx3-mini-androidtv-t3771277

Many years ago when I used the Chinese Android devices, you needed a custom rom to get proper functionality. I doubt things have changed. Find a custom rom for your box.

Well, you bought a Chinese junkbox. The other half of the equation is software. It's a hacked together version of touchscreen Android, which isn't the best choice for a living room TV. Hardware doesn't matter if they get some shit tier dev to cobble something together. That's why it sucks.

Lets see for Android....

-- > sellers who just want to sell you a device at the cheapest price before hyping and launching another product 6 months to a year later. All to keep a continual steam of boxes moving out the door.

-- > developers who either do not have the resources, knowledge or get paid enough to care to test devices properly with each OS / Firmware update or even bug bust serious annoying problems.

-- > Chipset makers and Google themselves who only care about basic video and audio streaming for their own services and the mainstream Apps like Netflix, Prime Video, YouTube etc. for Android TV devices.

If you look at AMLogic S905D, S905X, S905W or S912 devices running LibreELEC or CoreELEC Kodi - virtually everything 4K HDR, HD audio including Atmos, auto refresh and resolution switching works properly because there are both knowledgable developers who share common code and developers that are also users that actually care how well devices work.

Budget Android (TV) usually equals very little after sales support. The Profit margins simply are not there to provide it on such cheap devices.
