Are you sure it's not just the remote disconnecting? The new update causes the remote to stop responding after a while of idle time, and when you hit a button on it it forces the remote to reconnect to Bluetooth after about 10 seconds. This also seems to be how they "fixed" the problem of the remote not being able to turn on the box from sleep, as after that first click of a button I just wait 10ish seconds and then the power button works every time. And that definitely would make me think the box is frozen if the remote doesn't respond right away.
Or just do a factory reset.
If it's still on warranty I highly recommend calling Xioami support. They will replace it with a Mibox S model. I repeatedly fixed mine from system crashes, but never got them right.
