Is there a (relatively easy) way to stream a video file from a computer on my network to my AndroidTV?

by boermac

Hey all,

Just recently jumping into the AndroidTV arena. I ditched all of my Xfinity satellite boxes cause got sick of paying monthly fees for something I didn't use extensively. I got a couple of Mi Box S's to stream in those areas I still sometimes use. Found a Xfinity apk that's working and got that loaded on both of them.

Next thing I'd like to look at doing is I have some movies and shows that I LEGALLY OWN in digital format that I'd like to be able to stream to these boxes. Is there a way to do this that isn't overtly complex?

I'm good with technology so I can handle complex, but the amount of times I'd be using this isn't high so if it involves setting up a separate machine purely as a "server" just for this or having to dedicate a part of my desktop to always be on and able to feed, then it probably isn't worth it to me.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

kodi is probably the best media player around..

just setup network shares on your PC and you can add your library very easily in kodi

If you stream you have to stream it from somewhere, so I think your easiest bet is a Plex Server, you could just turn it on when needed.

If you don't mind paying some money, a NAS with the Plex Server is the most streamlined option probably.

Just use vlc on the pc. You don't need any app on the android tv

Mi box has built in Chromecast so probably the simplest way is to download a media player on your pc that supports Chromecast and cast your local media to the box. I think VLC does.

Plug a USB key or external drive into your router, and keep your media on that. Then you don't have to worry about keeping your computer on to stream the videos and every device on your network will always have access to it with very little configuration.

Pre-Code

If you legally own them, did you buy them as digital downloads? If so, some studios (Disney, Warner, Fox) let you view your purchases on other company's services and on Movies Anywhere. So if you bought something on iTunes, you can now watch it on Amazon, Google Play, Vudu, Movies Anywhere, and Fandango. And vice versa.

Don't know if this answers your question.

I use VLC and if that fails I have used videostream before

Same concept

If you need remote control and remote launch you need to setup some form of server control, at least videostream. It takes less resources than you think.

Some people here will or are recommending Kodi - be aware that even Kodi 18 seems to have real problems playing videos from an SMB share (even through VLC or FX, on the same share!)

  • Plex as a file server running on Networked PC.
  • Kodi as the viewing client and then use the Plex for Kodi Addon or the PlexKodiConnect Addon
  • non demanding users (that do not need subtitles support) can use the Plex App on Mi Box.

Forget all being said here, your best and easiest choice is download Soda Player to your pc and run the movie with it, then you will have an option to stream it to your box while on the same network.
