5 GHz vs 2.4 GHz on @Xiaomi MiBox - Connectivity or oversaturation?

by MiKeMcDnet

Yesterday, my mother accidentally converted my 2nd MiBox to Android 8 (wasn't going to update cause she's old and I don't want her complaining about the UI... Too late now. After the upgrade, she was having MASSIVE connectivity issues where none occurred before (have had some minor connectivity issues with other MiBox, but I can deal). While I was contemplating solutions, including buying her a NVidia Shield, I decided to try to troubleshoot all possible solutions.

I ended up taking her off of the 5 GHz antenna and moving her over to the 2.4 GHz network, which seems to have taken care of the problem. Considering the bandwidth of 2.4 GHz, this should not be the solution that I am seeking? Is my 5 GHz network overloaded? Does 2.4 GHz handle my home architecture better? WTF?

Ideas?

Change the 5 GHz channels in your router

Mi Box S with Oreo 8.10 latest version connected WiFi 5 GHZ no problem at all but this box is very close to the router same room. 4K videos work no problem. Mi Box S latest version of the Mi Box is suppose to have better WIFI than older Mi Box's.

Change 5ghz channel and set ch bandwidth to 40mhz. Also, good to set static ip address reservations in case it's an ip conflict.

You could try wired Ethernet for Mi Box.

The downside with 2.4GHz WiFi is it is easily subject to RF interferance. A microwave oven for example operating at 2.45GHz can cause issues.

Change to static ip in 5ghz wifi should fix the connectivity problem.
