Connecting mibox s to NAS

by GT503

Anyone using NAS storage with the mibox s? I'm planning to arrange for one but I'm worried about reading/writing to it with all the Android permissions thing..

I don't really know what you mean but I use a Mi box with Plex and Kodi which is pretty simple to set up. You can install Plex if your NAS is supported, or set up NFS shares for Kodi.

I think people are genuinely confused as to what you want. My first question is, "Why would your MiBox need to write to you NAS?" Traditionally, streaming devices connect to Network Attached Storage for the sole purpose of reading the files that are on there. This is usually done via SMB, NFS, DLNA, or (if your NAS supports it) a Plex Server. Everyone I have ever talked to uses a PC (or linux or mac device) for management of their NAS, since downloading files (arrrrg, matey!) or ripping and converting discs is not really something a streaming device is good at.

Personally, I have a Synology diskstation. My folders are shared via NFS and I point Kodi at the folders so that is scrapes those files onto my Shield, Fire TVs, android devices, etc... Make sure your NAS has a static IP, so that your MiBox heads to the same location every time. But I have never needed any of my devices other than the PC I use to manage it to write to it.

EDIT: AS far as permissions go, your MiBox shouldn't actually ever ask for permissions on your NAS since they are not actually physically connected to each other. The app you chose (Plex, Kodi, VLC) will ask for permissions to run on your MiBox, but the NAS (as the name implies) in connected to your network.

Yea, it wasnt hard. I YouTubed it. If you add the nas by name instead of IP, it stays after router reboot. So I have wdmycloud/movies instead of 123.123.12.1

It sounds like you are attempting to connect a hard drive to the USB port of the MI box. This will end with headache and grief.

If you are using an external NAS, it will be a standalone device on the network. It would have a smb shared folder, or a ssh share that can be used as a media folder in Kodi. If your external NAS supports it, you can install Plex on it and stream you media that way.

If you only have an external hard drive with media that you wish to share, look into devices that are specifically designed for the purpose. If you are on a tight budget, and don't mind learning about Linux, a raspberry pi and a 16gb microsd card will make a low powered server unit.

i just use plex for my nas, if i need to copy files i use a usb, or solid file explorer.. but usb is sadly easier to use than most androidTV file managers

I'm actually having the same exact issue as you. I want to download movies but I couldn't get the USB drive to be writeable no matter what I did with the 8.0 update. Someone told me that the Nvidia shield has a workaround for this so I guess the shield just has better support from the company.

Have you tried setting up the USB as internal storage instead of a removable storage? That way I think you can still download movies to the USB. Only problem with that is that it won't be readable by a computer and I'm not sure what would happen when you decide to unplug the USB device.
