Streaming 4K to android smart TV

by cybercube3

Hello peeps

I was wondering how you guys stream 4k content from your PC to tv. What is the best possible solution? My tv is philips 49PUS8303, something like that. It has chromecast built in, but i belive content that is stream over chromecast is not in 4k.. like it downscales it to 720, max 1080p. TV runs android 8.0.1 Thanks in advance! Cheers

I have a network folder on my pc with movies/tv shows and use vlc player android tv app to access that. It can play the highest quality 4k. I am using a nvidia shield tho.

Plex works well for me!

What and how and from where are you streaming content to the Chromecast?

Chromecast adjusts size/quality depending on the bandwidth it thinks it has, it seems you do not have enough bandwidth, whether internet or local. None of the other solutions will matter if you have bandwidth problems. Start by wiring up the TV. Try a local bandwidth test with Airflow before and after.

Most of you recommended Plex. I did a little research and it look promising. I will let you guys know how it turns out. Thanks everyone!

Plex will work well. The one problem I've faced with Android TV builtin to my Sony XBR is audio decoding isn't support for anything above Dolby Digital and DTS. So if the source video has TrueHD, Atmos etc the TV decoder doesn't play well with it. The 4k picture is super stunning with sony motion processing.

That's why I am looking at Mi Box S or Nividia shield. It's kinda disappointing that such expensive hardware is handicapped.

Thank you all for your suggestions, they helped a lot! I bought an external HDD only for movies&series, and made a plex server, as it seems the best possible solution at the moment. Am still in a testing phase but so far so good. Everything works and the 4k is amazing. Again, thank you best community ever and I wish you all a happy new year! Cheers
