Any BT controller compatible with Android should work. I have a 8bitdo SF 30 Pro and it works on everything.
The game controllers work connected but have not any success with any bluetooth controllers so far. Tried Xbox One S, PS4, and PS3.
But on the Nvidia, they all work great.
Logitech F710 works. Currently using it for Steam Link. But needs the dongle though.
Xbox one syncs flawlessly
Have you tried any controller that you already own? eg. a regular PC USB controller.
Many bluetooth and usb controllers work in Android. For 8-bit/16-bit video game emulation (NES, SNES, Genesis, Arcade, etc.) you could use something like this with RetroArch for the 'classic feel':

The XBOX One S controller (the one with Bluetooth) works fine
The 8bitdo range of controllers work great with the Mi Box.
I mostly play retro type games on the Mi, and the 8bitdo NES and SNES style pads are perfect for me in that regard.
Does PS5 or PS4 controller work with mi box?

The Xbox 360 wired one is confirmed (by me, lol) to work, the PS4 one doesn't work.
