Bought an Nvidia Shield, have a few questions

by Geronemo3

Hi,

Just recently got the nvidia shield and hooked it up yesterday.

I was looking through Nvidia gaming section.
It shows a lot of PC games for free with GeForce Now like Batman Arkham City, tomb Raider etc.

It also shows many games as Steam and I was able to login to my steam account and the game started playing.

  1. Now in above 2 cases i am guess the games are being streamed from Nvidia server to my shield via internet right?

  2. GeForce Now is Nvidia free game streaming service?

  3. What about games i own on Origin or UPlay? Can i play those games also on the shield?

  4. I have an AMD GPU and I am guessing I can't stream from PC to shield as it requires nvidia GPU right?

  5. Other then the above I can also download some optimized Google Play Store games on this right, these will need to be installed locally?

Thanks

You should be able to use the steam link android app to stream games from your non nvidia gpu pc.

  1. Yes
  2. Free for now as the service is in BETA. Once it launches as stable it will be a payed service
  3. You can play pretty much all games you own on Steam, Uplay and Battle.net . Origin is not supported at the moment
  4. Yes, streaming games from your own PC only works if you have an Nvidia GPU
  5. Yes

Correct assumptions all around. Per #3, I do not think you can link those to the shield. Just battlepass and steam, or use an Nvidia GPU to stream using streamlink from your PC (just about any game?, haven't tried it).

Regarding #4, you could try using other streaming apps like Moonlight/Parsec. They are gpu agnostic and should work. Not sure how well they'll work with an android TV interface though.

On #4, Nvidia Gamestream cannot stream from an AMD card. However, you can get the Steam Link app from Google Play and use that to stream.
