I have the Mi Box normal which works great still but I lost my remote and think the new one looks great, I'm hoping it's compatible.. (risky) but does anyone know if it's sold separately, or would want to sell me theirs if they don't use it?

MiBox S remote definitely does not work on mdz16ab.
You do realize that you're not limited to using the proprietary remote for your Mi Box only. There are so many other options for remotes out there, with as many if not more features and at an arguably cheaper price point than an original replacement. I also have the 1st gen Mi Box and abandoned the original remote for the Rii MX6 Wireless Airmouse. It has a lighted keyboard and Google-enabled voice function. Much better than the original imo.
If it was I'm guessing it would be at least half the price of a mibox s and there is no guarantee it will work
