Your phone is the best replacement. Android TV or Shield TV apps are both great.
Why not a Logitech Harmony?
I use only Google TV app and sell my remote for 30€ (buy for that new one s controller)

Out of curiosity, what steps have you taken to troubleshoot the remote?
Mine has "died" a few times, and with a combination of plugging in the remote and letting it charge overnight, and resetting the remote by holding back/home and voice search for 15+ seconds, I have gotten it in working order.
