Short of disabling CEC auto turn on, how to stop Shield from randomly turning tv on in middle of night?

by Max_Roc

Shield turns on tv in middle of night once a week or so. I thought issue had stopped after we replaced our television recently but it's happening again.

I don't want to disable CEC turn on. Wondering if there's a known buggy app that can cause this?

Edit: Just wanted to share a feature a Nvidia rep made me aware of, which I'm hoping will help me identify the culprit app: "settings - about - status and click on uptime after this happens. We added a feature to list last thing that woke shield"

I have the same problem with mi box since updating to Oreo. I had to turn off CEC.

Are you sure it's not a TV issue? Maybe the TV is rebooting in the middle of the night?

My Shield never randomly wakes up my TV. My Switch, on the other hand, does and I have to disable that on the Switch.

cmon_now

Happens to me all the time. Pretty annoying to wake up and have the TV on. Even if I change the input to TV before I turn it off, the Shield will still turn it on in the middle of the night. CEC doesn't seem to do anything.

You might need to move to another house and hope the ghosts don’t follow you.

Dinierto

I have CEC turned off and it still does this crap. CEC is one of those things that sounds great but is still full of problems.

OhThePete

Do you have a controller connected to the shield? Maybe try disabling it just in case it is randomly activating your shield

I'm having zero issues these days, I did have to toggle every cec/ir setting after updating to 7.2 during beta, after that there was an issue for a few days (which turned out to be the cat walking on a keyboard I thought was in a place where it wasn't gonna happen). linux version sony bravia+lg-bluray sound system+shield pro. Sony remote does everything/everywhere via cec. I really feel 90% of the issues are all in system setting and that they get triggered like a vape-boy between updates. Toggling everything between updates has fixed every single issue I've had since the oreo swap where I did a factory reset.

I had this problem as well and had to turn off CEC, otherwise I could have done with the Shield remote only.

There is nothing sitting on the remote or activating the remote. It was just Shield powering on for maintainence tasks and turning on TV.

I have the same problem with the Nvidia shield on 7.2 I think it is. Before this it worked perfect. But now it turns the TV on like 5 times a day. I had to turn CEC off.

Jasong222

Cat or other animal sitting on the remote? (Otherwise, like others, I suspect the problem might be with the tv. Bravias have issues sending signals to ports and whatnot even while turned off)

Dlinefivenine

Get a harmony hub that could maybe manage the shield for you and turn it off if it's on at certain times.

RoamingBison

CEC is poorly implemented on the Shield. I had to turn it off because whenever I tried to watch a different device the Shield would power up and "steal" the input from my receiver.

wolfgame

Mine's done this once ... do you have a gamepad as well as a remote or just the remote?

mitch4184

This started happening to me with in the past 2 weeks. I'm sure something changed with the latest update. I've had this setup for 2 years and this has never happened before the latest update

nascentt

Had this for months on my Roku too. Even disabled CEC and it still happens. Ended up having to unplug the TV every night

LG OLED and mine turns on randomly...lucky my tv turns itself off when it noticed a static image but still annoying. I noticed it it happening when i fell asleep on the coach and the tv turned on at like 3 am.

obmasztirf

CEC is hit or miss sadly. My Shield, Anthem receiver, and LG OLED work fine together but apparently it's super rare to have CEC work right.

swbradbury

I had this issue a while back. I had to turn off CEC on all devices connected to the TV. I then re-enable them starting with the Shield first and then everything else. If I started with a different device first then the Shield would keep randomly turning on.

Wish I could explain why the sequence worked only when the Shield was first. But, Hey... It's working now so...

CEC = Cesspool of Electronic Connectivity

randolf_carter

I use the Shield with CEC-on for my Yamaha AVR & Panasonic TV, never had it randomly turn on in the middle of the night.

What I do find super annoying is that if the Shield is asleep and I plug the gamepad into the USB cable to charge it, it turns everything on.

niekez

It's could also be the channel update, do you have cable on the TV?

Uninterested_Viewer

Poor CEC support is literally the number one reason I've given up on the Shield/Android TV and moved on to a simple Chromecast that gets CEC right. It's maddening on the Shield.

Couple of options, if the outlet powering the TV is accessible, get a small switch and flip it when not in use (upside, save pennies on your power bill). Alternatively, get a smart outlet. I like the Tp-link ones but there's lots out there.

Obviously spending money to solve an annoyance like this isn't awesome, but that's the sacrifice we make here on the bleeding edge of tech. :D

anyone think this could somehow have to do with "ok google".
