AndroidTV on x86

by macmac9900

Hi guys, Happy New year! I have currently have an Intel atom based mini pc running Windows 10,unfortunately it doesn't run it very well. I wanted to turn it into a snappy media pc that can run Netflix and IPTV, so I was wondering if I could make it run AndroidTV? Thanks!

The one thing you'll come up against is Netflix certification. Basically if the device isn't certified, you won't be able to watch Netflix in HD or 4K.

If it were me, I'd throw a Linux distro on there, but even then it's a lot of work.

Probably better off repurposing it for something else, and buying a Shield or another ready to go box.

Android TV for x86 by "Geek Till it Hertz" hasn't been updated for 2 years ( https://github.com/ric96/atvx86 ). You'd have better luck with Android-x86 ( http://www.android-x86.org/ ). Android on x86 still requires decent graphics hardware for hardware accelerated codecs and OpenGL ES hardware acceleration. What are the exact specs of your PC?

You should give Nox Player ( https://www.bignox.com/ ) a try first. I was able to use it to emulate Android 7.1.2 on Windows and run quite a few streaming/media apps really well (Mobdro, Morpheus TV, TeaTV, Cyberflix, Movian, MX Player Pro) on a friend's ridiculously old PC (2nd-gen i3, 256MB ATI card, 8GB RAM).

I’d put Linux on it and look for a distorted catered towards media centers or at least a skin. Or make a chromebox out of it.

Install Phoenix os

try OpenELEC

Investigate v8.9.x LibreELEC Kodi Leia for x86 hardware.

Kodi Leia under Linux/LibreELEC can do at least 720p Netflix with the Kodi Leia Netflix Addon.

LibreELEC can run entirely from a USB3 stick.

I'd buy a Shield TV and use that mini PC as a file downloader for a Plex library.

Just get a MiBox for 50 bucks or if you can afford, Shield TV. Trying to run android tv on any unofficial hardware is a deep deep rabbit hole.

I have a Sapphire Edge HD2 mini pc of which has a intel atom cpu, nvidia graphics chip, 2gb ram and 320gb hdd. I have it setup to dual boot libreelec and ubuntu mate. On the ubuntu distro i have retropie (x86 ver) installed of which starts on boot up. All works great and alot snappier than using lets say a raspberry pi. This may help:- https://openelec.tv/documentation/installing-openelec/dual-boot

You wont be able to run actual AndroidTV, just Android and maybe set it up to work with a BT Mouse and simple interface/UI
